I was tipped off to come here, I own a korg d-16 and it seems a recording school may have a one of the recommended SCSIcdrw's , need for download is this a good idea..1/2 the cost, warranty ? unsure.

Buy new. Even if its a cheap IDE unit. CDR drives have a definite life span, and are rarely sold unless they are starting to get unreliable.

The unit I'm workin on is a D-16 it's got scsi, which requires scsi 3 cdrw, it also has the imcompatable optical out which might be an option for backup, I don't know, all I know is any micpres or fx i've looked at have been coax out which would require midiman co2 $100 in Can, not sure what else is pratical on this optical out/in..thoughts

There are lots of pieces of equipment that have optical i/o. Plenty of computer soundcards do as well as lots of those stand-alone cd recorders. What I've been itching to do is to get a computer soundcard with optical i/o and midi i/o. Then using the d16 midi time code ( or mmc - I can't remember which) I could synchronize my d16 with a recording software (maybe cakewalk) and transfer my d16 songs to computer, two tracks at a time via the optical out.

Markert: Good to hear from ya.. Scsi is the way I guess, thats a neat idea on the download to cakewalk, what I'm looking to buy and day now is a mic/pre, but would like to access the optical, I'm trying to get around the dbx, size and money, Iv'e thought of dg stomp but it's 48khz and not cool for vocals, looking to demo the joe meek VCQ3 no digital, though I heard someone who got access via a dat, mic-dat-optical is this possible..any ideas..should I even bother with digital in for guitars & vocal at twice the cost for digital i/o mic/pre...any thoughts thanxs

I've had pretty good luck with using a presonus blue tube stereo mic pre. It doesn't have optical outs, but I run a short mic cable from its balanced xlr out to the xlr input on the d16. Haven't tried running bass, guitars etc thru it yet. When I record guitar parts, I just use the analog outs from my Johnson Millenium J-Station. Sounds good for some things and not for others.
Hope you are enjoying the d16. By the way, Sonusman posted some excellent mixing advice on the mixing bbs. I used the parametric EQ on the d16 today to do some of the cuts and boosts that he suggests. MAN! It really cleaned up alot of some of the songs I am currently recording.

Yeah Markert Iv'e monitored that forum, he knows what he's talking about as for me, I'm just the one shot player, still learnin, by the way I finally layed the dosh for a dbx 376, I thought I could use the eq, comp & de/eser over the dual i/o may regret it but here I go, the dig out was to attractive and the sound seemed more natural tube sounding then both the joe meek vc3q & blue tube, though the blue tube at 129$-149$ if your in the US is good, in Can your lookin 280$ can, don't make sense. Good luck with the d-16, by the way a sales guy told me the best access on the korg is through the back inputs, if your using your own mic/pre, I'll try this route untill I get to know the dbx than spring for the midiman co2...cheers
