US-428 and XP suspend/hibernate

I recently got a hold of a Tascam US-428 to use with an IBM Thinkpad T40p laptop running XP Pro SP1. It plugs into one of the laptop's two USB2 ports (it refuses to cohabitate my unpowered usb2 mini-hub with other devices). I am running the V. 3.24 Tascam driver.

So: I use hibernate a lot with this laptop. But it just hangs on 'preparing to hibernate' if the 428 is attached and powered. Doesn't matter if there's any apps running or not. The computer isn't locked -- the mouse still moves the pointer and the capslock light will go on on & off, but it stays in the blue 'preparing to hibernate' screen forever. Same hang on suspend (sleep). Don't know if my PC is trying to do some kind of impossible power management on the Tascam, or if the Tascam drivers are refusing to let the hibernation do its thing when they're active.

Anyone else having this same problem? I can't find mention of it on the web or usenet. If you've had this problem, have you found any workaround besides pulling the USB before suspend/hibernate?

If you have a 428 and XP, will you do me a favor and try to hibernate or sleep your computer (or both) and let me know if it works? Thanks.

i've had the same problem. but it never really posed a real problem because i never record without the laptop plugged in to the wall.

if i had a us-224 or us-122 it would be a real bugger because those are USB powered, so you can take the laptop outdoors and record without needing an AC/DC converter for the car.

Just tried Standby with my XP Pro PC. Yup, I get the Blue screen of purgatory - I gave up waiting.

If I turn the power off on the US-428, it goes into Standby immediately.

I also get an occasional Blue screen of Death when I turn on the power to the US-428 while my PC is on. Once it's on, it's cool, but I never leave anything unsaved when I push that switch in. I always hold my breath. Seems better to turn it on before I boot up and off before I shut down.

thanks for posting. What depressingly crapply PC drivers! Got this reply from Tascam tech support two weeks after I mailed in about the issue:

You need to keep hibernate and sleep off when using the US-428.

Thank you,

is there a reason that you need the tascam on while the computer is hibernating??

it's a laptop, so I need (okay, want very much) for it to hibernate on a very low battery alarm, and definitely to suspend itself if I leave it for 10 minutes. Only when it's unplugged, of course... and at home it is plugged in along with the tascam so there it is not a big issue. But for field recording, outlets are often scarce and it would be nice to use the laptop on battery for a few hours even with a plugged-in tascam.

Also, every single time I pack the computer but leave the tascam at home, I hibernate the laptop before I pack it up--I am getting in the habit of pulling the USB *before* hitting the hibernate button, but once in a while I get it backwards and then I lose everything I had open.
