Us 428 Latency Issues in Adobe Audition

2 Questions regarding use of the US 428. Just picked up one of these units in order to record into Adobe Audition (1.5). Previously I'd been recording in an improvised set-up, plugging mic pre-amp outputs into an old 4 track then plugging the stereo LR of the 4-track through the 1/8 inch connector on my laptop's soundcard - not the most sophisticated set-up, but it did the job. I record on an IBM laptop running Windows XP.

Anyways, I recently picked up the US 428 in order to use a better soundcard than the one in my lap-top and to have the ability to record multiple ins at once as I often record my small accoustic band (guitar, vocals, mandolin, banjo, fiddle etc..) and wanted to have the ability to record several parts at once onto seperate tracks to get that live feel that is sometimes lost with multiple overdubs. Nonetheless, overdubs will always be necessary from time to time, and I have encountered a rather annoying problem with the US428 that I did not have in my previous set-up:

When over-dubbing I have noticed a considerable audio latency - over-dubbed tracks are just that hair off the original track and sound screwy. I have tried the direct monitoring button - which did nothing to help. Plus I brought down the latency to the minimum (256) in the 428 control panel - which helped a bit, but still too much lag. Anyways, I never had problems with my old set-up when I was monitoring straight out of my lap-top's soundcard. I read in another forum that some people still monitor directly out of their computers and by-pass the US428 in order to avoid latency. Is this the only way or are there other things I can do - in Adobe Audition or with my lap-top to avoid this latency and still monitor out of the US428?

Thanks for the help :)
