MoonMix Studios
People,

Finally upgrading from Pro Audio 9 to SONAR (I know, I know); & need to make a decision as to whether or not to go with SONAR, or SONAR XL.

The reason I ask is: I will also be picking up (as part of a total PC studio upgrade) Steinberg's Wavelab; & iZotope's Ozone 2, so as to have a decent mastering setup...

...& I wanted to know if the mastering tools provided in SONAR XL, which are Sonic timeworks EQ & Compressor X, are as good...

...& therefore justifying the extra cost of the upgrade?

Are there any SONAR users out there, familiar with these tools, that can help me out?

Thanks in advance,

I have used Ozone in addition to Sonar 2.2 XL for some time now.

I find Timeworks EQ useful on individual tracks. You could of course use it as a mastering EQ, but Ozone has what I think is a better EQ with better spectrum display. As for comparing with CompressorX, I Ozone does much, much more.

Now, this doesn't mean that you'll get better results from using Ozone, however. It's quite powerful and can ruin the sonics of your output if you get overzealous with some of the settings.

So you may get better results with just Timeworks EQ + CompressorX in some cases. Having more choice is definitely not a bad thing.

XL also comes with DR-008. I don't use it much, but I've heard it put to pretty good use.
