Upgrading Microphone - Advice Needed Please!

Has anyone heard the difference between the:

- Shure KSM27
- Shure KSM32SL

Is there really a $200 difference in sound quality between these two? I'd like to save money if I can help it... Or does anyone think the AT mics completely outshine anything made by Shure?

Thanks again, guys. This board rules!

Sennheiser:

Well, since you asked...

I usually (time and budget permitting) throw up a number of mic and preamp combinations to test on a particular vocalist, and let them make the final decision on what they hear. If it is a an instrumental album, i may do the same for the main solo instrument as well.

I don't own a 441, so i can't say if the results would change if I had one - but I do own some other nice dynamics, as well as a Royer 121 (ribbon), and a whole pile of different condenser mics, both tube and solid state.

With a couple of rare exceptions, vocalists inevitably seem to choose one of the large diaphragm condensers (usually one of the tube options). It would be an interesting experiment to see how many would switch their preferences to your 441 from, say, my L47. But it doesn't seem likely.

Given that you admit that the 441 is more or less the only mic you ever use on ANY source, it's hard not to take your inevitable recommendations (sousaphone? try a 441! nose flute? try a 441! classical soprano? try a 441! steinway? try TWO 441's!) with a humorous grain of salt. Not because I don't believe you that it's a great mic, but just because:

• most of us actually like having different colors and qualities to chose from when mic'ing different sound sources and different styles of music.
• if you don't have a collection of mics to compare, how can you really know if it is the "best" for a particular application?

No offense meant on this response... you seem to be a delightful guy. Just trying to give an honest answer to your question! ;)

No offence taken at all. And you are correct. I have limited experience with other mics. Mostly those belonging to other people that I was present for while they were being used.

I guess since I am the only one I have ever recorded, that I've found that my voice sounds good with this mic as well as on my guitar. I'm also concerned with my room. It's not tuned, it wasn't even built as a studio and I want to exclude as much of the room as I can without putting up Sonex everywhere. I'm very afraid that if I buy a LD condensor that every little nuance of this room is going to go right to tape. The 441 excludes almost everything except a direct source which I'm thankful for.

I'd really like a few nice condensors, and I'm going to need them eventually.

I've been looking at small diaphram condensors on e-bay, but I can never get enough information out of the seller to commit to buying. Most that I look at (read: afford) are no longer made and the manufacturers web site no longer has the info posted.

When I can afford it, I think I'll just buy new. I've given serious thought to the AT4033 that everyone here recommends. Your recommendations here at this site are all I have to go on, since I have no contact with others into recording outside of this website.

I really don't know if the 441 is "the best" for a given situation, but it has to be the best for me because it's all I have and it seems to work great in my recordings.

Had the opportunity about 12 months back to buy a 441 for $250 Aussie. Still kicking myself that I didn't get it. :(
