When I started this thread....

....it was a cry for help. I needed a verb unit fast and didn't have time to go out into the world and try them for myself as I normally would. Folks here were kind and responded and my problem now has a temporary solution. The thread has continued and is now providing users with great info for a common issue. (I am now looking for an Ibanez unit, for example.) Kudos to all and, at the risk of redundancy, thanks again. Dave aka up-fiddler

I had an SDR 100 years ago, and really did not know what I had (still looking for my sound then). Thanks Don for convincing me to try it again. I was able to pick one up off Ebay and just got it today. I fired it up and my tastes have surely matured. I am digging it!

The Ensoniq DP Pro is another great <$1000 effects unit.

cheers man, thanks for the kudos, great purchase, glad you're diggin it!

:-)

great to hear Up-Fiddler. PS, the sony mru201 or mur201 or whatever is the same as the ibanez sdr1000+ more or less, same sound, same innards, maybe some different algos but not much from what I've read. so watch for them too, but the price of the ibanez is what keeps them cool.

now no more talk about the sdr1000 before they become the next big thing LoL

hey by the way, Up-Fiddler? do you play fiddle/violin?

Just a little follow up for me. I ended up getting a Kurzweil Rumour and I'm pretty pleased. It's definitely sounding better than the ITB verbs I had been using. Of all the settings on this unit, to me, some of the small halls are the richest and most natural sounding verbs. Some of the plates sound really good on vocals as well. Still need thousands more hours of use to really explore this unit, but at least for now, I'm pretty happy with the purchase. I'd definitely recommend hardware verbs for those that have never tried them.

Yep...that was my experience as well when I switched to hardware years ago. I love to use long pre-delay times to set a nice, dark background for vocals and guitars. The Rumor and the Rev-5 get way more use than the plugins.

nice.

as a matter of course, one doesn't need a pcm to add subtle almost invisible verb to lots of tracks and make it improve the mix as described above.

lots of very good older lower end units can do that well, but it takes much more work.

Great post...totally agree. It takes a more work, and you can't push the low-end units hard, but it can definitely be done.

Interesting. I've been using reverb plug-ins with varying degrees of success for a while now.

The other day just for kicks I pulled out an old ART FXR unit that I have laying around from my 4-track days. It's the only hardware verb that I have in the house, and admittedly not highly regarded. I recorded it full wet to a dedicated track, and then mixed that with the original dry track with curious results.

I thought at first that the total wet track actually sounded pretty bad, but, when I put it in the mix with the dry track the results were much more pleasing and subtle, and easier to control than I have been able to get with the plugs.

It's got me thinking.

It's interesting how full wet, solo, verbs often have a sound you wouldn't expect made from hearing the track + the effect.

I had an FXR back in the mid 90's and I thought it was pretty good FX unit compared to the other low end units I had then. I would take that unit over most plug-verbs.

I'm on the other side of the coin actually. I have the ART fxr, the original Alesis XtiC, a bunch of Alesis Wedges (which I think ARE very good) and a bunch of other "$200" hardware units. Basically, as they came out, I bought them, think newer=better, which generally wasn't the case. Now I use them for verbs for monitor mixes, etc.

On the other hand, I think the Perfect Space convolution reverb that came with Sonar PE and some good impulses I got, is just in a MUCH better league than these budget reverbs. I even got some free impulses for the PCM Lexi's and the 480 and 960, and I think they just smoke.

I love reverb...I'd wash my clothes in it if I could.

Now I think the upper end boxes are better, but actually not by that much.

I really want a Bricasti m7. Anyone have $3600 I can have?
;) Seeing's how it turns out some of our "wealth", apparently, is about as real' as software floating around-
-maybe we can just download some! :)
