Does anyone know how Ray achieved that mysterious sounding organ sound on the intro to The Unknown Solder by the Doors? I don't have an organ myself, but I've always wondered if it was just "studio magic". There is a live version and it's just a guitar doing the intro with drums, so I dunno if they always did it that way live or what. Any ideas?

Back then they didn't really have 'studio magic'... not in the true sense anyway.

Organs at that time used an additive process to build waveforms using drawbars. My guess is that he weakened the fundemental and didn't use any sub-harmonics. I'm not listening to the song right now, but if memory serves me correctly he probably used a lot of 3rd harmonic on that tone.

Well, by studio magic I meant more like compression techniques or messed up Sgt. Pepper type stuff that is hard to reproduce live. But thanks, is there anyway to recreate that with software?

The trick is to program the electric organ correctly. Not a lot of fundemental tones, but a lot of upper harmonics.
