Does anyone know to acheive ?uestlove's Thompson's snare sound? He is the drummer for the Roots and many other artists.
I have used a technique of placing the snare mic facing directly at the side of the shell and playing rimshots for the duration of the recording, but I am wondering if anyone else has ideas on how to achieve a similar sound.

He might sample it and run it throught a akai sample or something for on the albums. May even have a trigger sound mixed with the snare sound for live or it's just how that snare sounds to begin with.

I remember that many people thought on many of the Roots' albums, he was using some sort of drum sampler/synth and not actually playing. I have no idea how he gets that sound but it's just crazy seeing the things he does.
