wsup all.
So my hard disk crapped out a few months back and when I bot a new one I decided to install ubuntu instead of xp. To sum things up, I love this Operating System. I think it is better than XP and MacOS. There are certain operations that the others might do better but overall experience I think ubuntu is better.
For audio I have been using Reaper for recording, Audacity for 2-track stuff, and burning discs with brasero. I didn't get too far into ardour.
HOWEVER,
getting all of this stuff installed has been an ongoing hell. The ubuntu Hardy Heron installed just fine. But getting my Layla24 to function properly is a nightmare and its still not working after 6 months. The system only recognizes it about half the time I boot. It still will not notice the inputs on my separate mytek spdif converter, although I *believe* it is clocking off of it. I have yet to do a serious listening test to determine this. For now I trust it. Reaper only recognizes a pair of ins and a pair of outs while in xp it had all 10 ins and 8 outs. (10 ins counting the spdif) Ardour claims to recognize 8 ins and 8 outs. This is after spending dozens of hours trying to configure Jack, Jack control, wine, Alsa, boot scripts, following arcane installation instructions that I found on the internet after hours of searching.
My sound card is supported, but I have searched the internet far and wide and cannot seem to solve these issues. I really want this route to work out, I dont want to go back to windows. but I am being forced to if I can't figure this stuff out.
Has anybody got theirs fully functioning???????????
