*************************
wsup all.

So my hard disk crapped out a few months back and when I bot a new one I decided to install ubuntu instead of xp. To sum things up, I love this Operating System. I think it is better than XP and MacOS. There are certain operations that the others might do better but overall experience I think ubuntu is better.

For audio I have been using Reaper for recording, Audacity for 2-track stuff, and burning discs with brasero. I didn't get too far into ardour.

HOWEVER,
getting all of this stuff installed has been an ongoing hell. The ubuntu Hardy Heron installed just fine. But getting my Layla24 to function properly is a nightmare and its still not working after 6 months. The system only recognizes it about half the time I boot. It still will not notice the inputs on my separate mytek spdif converter, although I *believe* it is clocking off of it. I have yet to do a serious listening test to determine this. For now I trust it. Reaper only recognizes a pair of ins and a pair of outs while in xp it had all 10 ins and 8 outs. (10 ins counting the spdif) Ardour claims to recognize 8 ins and 8 outs. This is after spending dozens of hours trying to configure Jack, Jack control, wine, Alsa, boot scripts, following arcane installation instructions that I found on the internet after hours of searching.

My sound card is supported, but I have searched the internet far and wide and cannot seem to solve these issues. I really want this route to work out, I dont want to go back to windows. but I am being forced to if I can't figure this stuff out.

Has anybody got theirs fully functioning???????????

Some of the jacklab guys hang out in their IRC room on freenode. I'll try and get the exact adress for you in a bit. They can help if anyone can.

irc.freenode.net channel #jacklab.

While you are on IRC you may as well visit some of the ubuntu using reaper guys on reaper chat:

irc.mixxnet.net channel #reaper

Has anybody got theirs fully functioning???????????

As in has anybody anywhere gotten their Linux install fully functioning? Probably not. That's just how Linux works (or doesn't as the case may be...) :D

ok update.

the card loads pretty consistently in rt kernal, though the normal kernal is a toss-up.

all 8in/8out is functioning in the echo mixer and in ardour.

however reaper still only sees 2 in/ 2 out.

hmmm......

Maybe a silly question.. but did you already set up WineAsio?

As opposed to what? Don't see much Operating System elitism on these forums.... which is pretty nice, too because...

...no matter what OS you're flaming or endorsing... but it's double gay if you're flaming Linux ;) .

Yes, I installed wineasio. I dont think there is any OS elitism here, I got a chuckle out of the comment. The comment posted by CasB seems to pertain to exactly my problem. Now that I read through that whole link I realize it is the page I used to get it going in the first place (or not going).

In that link, VocalFons says to change some settings before installing. Since I already installed wineasio, do I need to un-install it? or should I just install on top of the old one?

Don't worry. I flame all the major OSes. And Linux is really hard to get fully functioning.

Christ...Linux! Gimme one good justification for it. I'm sick of the elitist fanboy shit. Why do you use it? To "stick one to the 'man' (ie Bill Gates)"? Linux pulls. It has so far to go. I wish this "Linux fanboy" shit would fucking cease, it's a fucking joke. Linux can FUCK OFF.

since somewhere in there, there was a question, I will respond.

I don't think anybody on this thread said anything elitist.

I tried it because it's free. I use it because It's pretty good. and free.

I tried installing linux 14 years ago on a 386 with a 40 MB hard drive. (yes, 40 megabytes).

Back then, I'd say it had a long way to go. This time around, its been waaay easier.

:D

Can anyone answer my question about having to un-install before re-install?

may have answered my own question. The file that VocalFons says to edit doesn't exist. the readme file says you can set the # of inputs and outputs with

export ASIO_INPUTS=10
export ASIO_OUTPUTS=8

commands in bash (for example).

I tried re-installing over the old one and it didn't do anything. (meaning the installer didn't appear to run).

time to search and search and search some more.

OK. I figured out that the page you linked to was now using an updated version of wine-asio. So I installed it, used the instructions you linked to, and it works!!! I have 8ins and 8 outs in reaper.

Only promblems left is 1)s/pdif inputs not working . the audio shows up in the echo mixer, but those inputs do not work in reaper, and do not appear in ardour. trying to set jack control to "10" inputs instead of "default" crashes it. this seems like either an alsa problem or a jack problem.

and 2) Realtime not working in jack control, also crashes it. This doesn't stop me from recording, but this is a recommended setting.

Did you run into either of these problems?

Oh, ok, then - as long as the flaming is equally spread, heh... I know what you mean about it being hard to get running (at first, at least..) because everything is so different/alien seeming. Once you get used to it, it's about the same as the others, though...

Well.. that was cute. It was all in good fun until you threw this tantrum. Well.. here you go -

I use linux because software developers make their software install and run properly as user, thus allowing the security model to actually work, and eliminating the headache of security *completely*. You will never see "You must be administrator to run this program" in linux unless there's a DAMN good reason... that crap happens in Windows with games, office software, all kinds of crap that doesn't need admin rights - which, in turn, totally kills the Windows security model (which is actually really good, it just can't work because everybody always runs their computers as administrator).

Another good reason is that it's free - when you've got servers and workstations running, licensing fees pile up fast. Also, the BSA is not exactly a very understanding organization when it comes time to check that your licenses are legit - see the Ernie Ball story for a few good reasons to run Linux in your business here: http://news.cnet.com/2008-1082_3-5065859.html

Oh yea.. and fuck fuck FUCK shit FUCK SHIT fuck shit shit fuck FUCK <---Threw that in so you could understand what I was saying ;)

It seems I inadvertently hijacked this thread with a Linux debate/flame war.

I'm sorry, Falken. :( Good luck with your install.

thanks. anybody gotten realtime to work in jack in ubuntu?

I don't know if you're into the whole IRC thing, but there is a room for Jack on freenode. Server: irc.freenode.net and room #jack - You can maybe speak to some of the developers in there... I'm not really sure if they are the snobby kind, though...always a risk when you go to an IRC room for help, heh..

Hey Falken, any further luck on this?

I've been working with Unbuntu for about 2 weeks. Over the weekend I was finally able to get realtime Jack working, but for playback only. I think my soundcard is the limiting factor preventing me from running capture/duplex. I'm running Hardy Heron on a Dell Inspiron 1501.

I'm finding jack to be flaky, honestly. Sometimes I'll load a sound app and it will crash the jack server. Not sure why. I'm hoping it's just the crappy soundcard.

I just ordered a Focusrite Saffire LE, and an expresscard firewire interface. I'll post my experiences here once they arrive.

Update: I've been actively working to get Ubuntu running on my laptop for weeks now. It works for basic stuff, but getting audio going has been a nightmare and I've hit a dead end.

First off, I have a firewire device (Focusrite Saffire LE) connected to my laptop via an Expresscard. Installing the firewire drivers (ffado) was a pain, mostly because they're still in beta, so you have to compile the code yourself. Then after that, you have to recompile the JACK audio server so it detects the firewire drivers. This alone took me a few days.

The firewire connection is now working (better than Vista, but not as good as XP). However I find JACK to be very unstable. When I start it, I get anywhere from 3 - 15 seconds of audio before it crashes. And since JACK is central to audio/midi/instrumentation, Ubuntu is unusable for me as far as music goes.

I'm positive the problem comes down to JACK, but I don't know if it's JACK+Ubuntu, JACK+my particular hardware, or just JACK itself. My next step is to get a dual boot of XP/64Studio going and see if that's any better. (I'll check out the CCRMA collection on 64Studio... thanks evm)
