Has anyone compared the 1176SE with the 1176LN? The description states they sound similar when not pushed hard. I typically use compressors lightly. Would they both sound the same when used lightly?
Some newsgroupers are raving about the Pultec EQs. I'm no fan of digital EQs but they are saying these sound like the real analog deal.
What is your overall impression of the lower cost project pack? I am interested in the classic colors this package could provide.

thanks much,
Bob

They have the same basic flavor - True, when pushed the differences are more obvious. The SE is really made for lower hogging of resources.

And yes, the Pultec is freakin' magic. The single best plug ever made IMO.

The studio Pack is a fine starter set, but you'll get hooked and want everything anyway. :D

Your best bet is to get one of the Mackie distributed UAD-1 cards. You get more for your money with the LA2A included. There are still some of these out there at GC.

The two 1176s are very similar up to push point when you want excessive compression, then the difference shows up. The Pultec is almost a religious experience as is the LA2A.

i always felt the 1176LN added more color off the bat, "analog" mojo to put it in more 'descriptive' terms, while the 1176SE was cleaner.

Thanks for the replies. Alot of times you buy gear and at first you may (or maybe not!) be happy with your new toy only to learn it's dark ugly side in due time.

If I bought something like this I would want it to be a solid addition to my rig.

Im running 3 of them and will never look back!!

Someone else mentioned above that the studio pack was a good place to start and I agree. You get most of the available plugs in the studio pack and then all you need to do is add project packs when you need more power. Once the plugs are unlocked on your studio pack, they will be unlocked on ALL Uad cards in your system.

Cheers!

Its up to 4 so if you have more then 4 gotta pay for that license...

m8,

I posted the same Q a few wks ago.
Get the mackie one.
U get LN and La2a for nearly the same price as project pak

The pultec is life transforming..

It's like a big button tht says:
"Now switch over to nice creamy smooth analogue"

incredible!!

When you pull up an instance of the 1176LN it has a default setting. When you pull up the 1176SE the default is "off". Now, set the SE to the same settings as the LN and there is indeed a difference. That difference made me decide to purchase the LN :)

The Se is less gritty and less (for lack of a better term) "whumpy/pumpy" :D than the Black face Ln.

Basically the se has less flavor and more transparency.

Good description! :D IMHO, the LN can get gritty, but I like it a lot on cleanish settings. It seems to have more of an iron transformer sound than the LE. It's good to have both.
