Various quotes about the C1 from Pete Leoni and Ted Perlman at prorec.com (two of the "golden-eared pro's" that Alan cites as authorities):
..."There it was, next to a Neumann U87. Peggi, Pete, Alan, and myself put on the headphones and Peggi started singing into the 87. Awesome, that classic Neumann sound that is heard on probably 90% of the records ever made. She then moved over to the C1 and sang into that. EXACTLY the same, no difference. We were all amazed."...
Comparisons are nearly always inevitable. If one had to choose a 'reference' mic to make a comparison with then, like 'em or not, the U87 has been an industry stalwart for the last thirty years, so then it is not unreasonable to use that as a reference.
I have no problem with someone saying they prefer the sound of a C1 over a U87 or anything else for that matter... in fact there are situations where I'd possibly use a C1 over a U87. However to claim that they are EXACTLY the same is, quite frankly, either misguided, mistaken or someone is having a 'leg pull'!.
Unless of course they were using an unrepresentative sample of a U87... or a C1.
If I'd gone out and bought a C1 because of that claim... then I'd be pretty cheesed off! However it's a $200 mic.. NOT a $2000 mic!
Plenty of people obviously do like the C1 because they have bought them in droves and I haven't seen much in the way of negative posts from those regretting their purchase. That, in itself, must mean something. So hats off to Alan. Some may criticise him for waving the Studio Projects flag on many recording forums... not just this one, however no one can accuse him of not keeping his finger on the pulse of opinion... either good or bad.
IMO Studio Projects have raised the bar somewhat at the 'affordable' end of the market. That's not to completely discount some of the other budget manufacturers, but it appears by desiging their own products and maintaining control over quality assurance etc. that SP's seem to be making more of an effort to establish themselves as a serious contender in the project studio market. Sure Alan has a vested interest in this... he want's us to buy his products... BUT, if we don't like what we hear then NO SALE!
Reviews and testimonals are a sales tool that most companies use to help market their products. How many companies post negative reviews of their products?? Of course the negative ones are always weeded out. So already the process is somewhat skewed. For me, inaccurate positive reviews do more damage than good. While the 'C1 sounding exactly like a U87' testimonial obviously won't hurt sales to the 'uninitated' sector of the market, it's inevitable that it will draw some raised eyebrows from the more experienced end of the market.
I haven't ever heard Alan himself claiming it sounds like a U87.
Anyway the bottom line is if you like the C1... buy it! If you don't like it... don't buy it! But DON'T base your decision on the basis of someone's 'dubious' claim that it sounds like a U87.
..... because it DON'T!!
P.S. If this is indictive of Mr Leoni's reviews then I'm afraid he will be relegated to my 'ignore' list in the future.
