Actually sounds very good ;)
And looks great

Anyone else with an interest for the more affordable rack gear?

What does the 'Surround' Switch to? I used to have one of these - but I don't remember it very well.

It widens the sound stage.
It's pretty effective but easy to overdo.

I love the more affordable rack gear.
It's a amazing what kind of deals you can get. But most of all how great some of those units sound.

It's always a risk with vintage gear but sometimes you find something you don't read a lot about and wonder why?

I bought the tube ultrafex mainly to try out and i just loved the looks. And it sounds awesome.

Would not hesitate to use it during mastering. Because there was not a lot found i thought it would be helpful to write an article.

If i missed something let me know so I can add it.

That was a great read Frank !! Thanks for taking the time to write and post it !! I've been on the fence about the Behringer SX-3040, but I'm going to take a closer look at this unit !! I'm 60 years old and digital ( daw/plug-ins ) aren't for me so.... but I LOVE my old Tascam DP-02 !! My effects are ancient. Like you said, with the advent of DAW / Plug ins, it's amazing what you can get on the used hardware market. In another 20 years, some of these folks are going to regret getting rid of this stuff !! :O)

It's weird
They are modelling all the old gear. I even saw a quadraverb plugin for 99,00.

The question is do you want to pay a lot of money for a photocopy that is obsolete when the OS is updated too many times. Or do you want to original for the same price or less ;)

Buy now. It is only getting worse. Good rack units are sometimes shockingly cheap.

I hate that those VST i bought from Waves or where ever, are no longer working. So many purchased software things, became access for a couple years.

The real hardware is best. Always.

A great(best I found) $100 used Made in USA microphone preamp for homerecording(not a transformerless bounce down machine), is the Presonus MP-20. Discrete pathway, has digital servo control. Jensen input transformers. Pairs great with DBX160xt(studio standard $250usd) compressor that has matching brand output Jensen transformers. Outputs from the mono bus and has a stereo master bus that pans C, right or left. The MP20 also allows overdriving the input transformer. Turn up the input gain, turn down the master out..Not just a volume knob. A knob for stimulating harmonics, IDSS. The MP20 is perfect for the home artist that doesn't want to spend $1000+ for their microphone preamp, but requires awesome sounds. It starts HERE.

I went to someone to get an mdx1000 for 25,00
He also had a 2600 and didn't understand why I didn't want the newer one ;)

The mdx1000 is one of those units that sound great on guitars or drums. It's in essence a dbx160 or something similar. And for 25,00 you can't pass.
