Returned from the dead
ok so i have to first say, if i posted in the wrong area, sorry

ok so im using a marshall mg100hdfx (i know crappy solid state amp) but the thing is, i really love the cleans on this amp. i also really like the blues crunch from this amp, but the distortion is just not cutting it as a metal tone. the cleans i get are incredibly clear and defined and im hoping that by running a distortion pedal in front of it such as the boss metal zone ill be able to get a good high gain sound while retaining a good amount of definition and clarity. im also hoping that by running a tube preamp in front of the amp ill be able to get some warmth in my tone.

my signal chain is like this guitar -> amp -> shure sm57 -> behringer mixer -> outboard gear (compressor, eq, gate and such) and finally into my emu 1212m recording at 24bit/192khz.

can anyone tell me if this is a good idea or will work. if so why? and if not, why? and i would also greatly appreciate product recommendations such as preamps and pedals. all opinions welcome :D

thanks in advance for any input. as always, much appreciated - nic

You could pick up an AVT and get a real good tone. The thing about the Metal Zone is although it has an intense gain it has this annoying midrange sound. I use the Marshall Guv'nor which is a very good sounding distortion pedal with a 3 band EQ on it similar to what the Metal Zone has but it sounds way better.

the guv'nor sounds like its more for blues/blues rock type stuff. im looking for more of a really high gain metal sound, i guess i should have been more specific with that (ill give some expamples of tones i would like to come somwhat near to at the end of this post) i definitely wont rule anything out, who knows maybe ill try it out and love it. ill definitely look into it! ive heard alot about marshalls pedals but ive never gotten a chance to test one out.

i appreciate the input :D

some examples of some metal gain i would like to at least come into the ballpark with:
mudvayne - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wT8_nHTrpDI
all that remains - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTdrAHzIYS4
chevelle - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNmoWfHDzfA&feature=fvw
or even a metallica type distortion

as always, much appreciated

The Guv'nor is not really a blues pedal at all. I used it in the band I was in and we were doing Black Sabbath, Jackyl, etc. It's the best sounding distortion pedal I've come across. You can even hook up two if you really want more gain.

Marshall does make The Jackhammer but quite honestly it doesn't sound as good as the Guv'nor and it's more difficult to operate.

yeah like i said ill have to try it out. im hoping my local guitar center will have some of the marshall pedals out to try.

i cant seem to find any prices for the marshall pedals though.... anyone have any links???

It's an easy pedal to find. Try American Musical Supply.

nope not there either :/

and id hate to go check prices on ebay cause 1). i really dont know how to use ebay (i know i need to catch up with the times lol) and 2). i dont want to just get some odd sellers price, id rather get one set price that i can expect to pay so i can figure it into my budget.

i guess i could just call up a music store and ask them...

ah i guess if nothing else i could just try to find a friend who knows how to use ebay...

i read on this site that the art tube pres really suck and might as well not even have a tube in them at all and give no warmth or any positive results...
if this is true, what are some tube pres that any of you could recommend to me??
my budget would be around 100$ for the pre and 100$ for a pedal.

my other guitarist from my old band used a presonus blue tube to fatten up his sound.it sounded pretty good too.gave his solid state randall a much better cruch.he went through a korg g-3 into the presonus and into a rack eq but i'm not sure of his exact signal chain configuration.

If it is a fuzz box you want, it could be the ticket...but it is useless in its intended pourpose...the warmth they try sell to you is just a bit of high frequency saturation or distortion to fool you into thinking you have a tube sound...but in reality you can pull the tube out and bridge the circut...you will have the very same sound.
Id just go on craigslist and get a pedal that a guitarist with a tone I liked is using...like a fuzz face or big muff pi...spend a little on something you will be able to sell and get a profit...most of those go up in value.
