Hey Guys

Need some advice.

I was thinking about moving into tube effect pedals. Any suggestions as what to grabb and what brand and models.

Figure ask anyone who has used any.

Or would i be better off buying a tube amp. Like i really need another amp:)

How about tube pedals on a tube amp? Or would that just be over kill.

Well, I don't keep track of the gazillions of pedals out there, but I really like my Matchless HotBox for a tube pedal. I believe they also made one called the CoolBox. It doesn't appear that the current Matchless company still makes this Pedal, but I think that Bad Cat, which Mark Sampson formed after leaving Matchless, makes similar pedals.

I'd look into getting a tube amp first before worrying about the pedals. Tube pedals into a solid state amp just isn't the same. But as far as tube pedals go, the "Tonebone" pedals have their fair share of fans and they come in a few different flavours. Or another one would be the old original: the Chandler/Butler Tube Driver... It all depends on what sound you're after really.

There are many amps out there that Use a Tube preamp and a solid state output stage Like the Marshall ValveState amps and they have a pretty good reputation, also much of the Tube sound comes from the preamp tubes being overdriven not the output stage.....

That being said there are very few Tube pedals out there that actually run the tubes at the there proper operateing voltages, Most are starved plate designs that run the tubes a low Voltage and use Opamps to overdrive the tube and most Real tube pedals cost quite a lot of money.....

I just finnished building a Tube pedal called "The Real Mc Tube" which uses a 12ax7 Twin triode with a Plate voltage of about 200V and it has a nice meatey Tube sound and sounds even better with a Booster in front of it....

I built it in an afternoon and made it out of spare parts and it was quite easy...If you are interested I could sent you the schematic.....

Cheers

I figure i should go for the the tube amp.
That's why i asked. The prices on tube pedals are really up there. Actually i'm gonna build my own tube amp. Figure if i'm gonna dive in, might aswell dive head first into the shallow end:)

I was thinking about building my own pedal if you could send the the plans it would be great.

I've tried a lot of tube pedals, never quite found an OD pedal I liked.

until I tried the Fulltone OCD. 150 bucks is a lot of money for an overdrive pedal, but I love it. It sounds good on solid state amps, but sounds heavenly with tubes.

just a thought.

Seymour Duncan Twin Tube.

Fantastic Pedal.

But I'd definitely be more concerned with getting a tube amp than a pedal.

Get an amp with effects loop at line level and get yourself some rack-mount tube equipment... like a nice Universal Audio leveller / compressor :D

Great Info

Thanks guys now i got a good place to actually start.

I'm gonna DIY a tube pedal and see how that goes.

Already ordered a DIY Tube Amp kit.

I went from digital back to tubes for my home audio. Still have the surround for movies.

I really want to go tube for my guitar stuff. And maybe even go tube for the
home recording studio.

Digital fine but either go tube or go home...:)
