Hello,

I have been working on a TSR-8 and its seems to be working well (i have another TSR-8 to compare it to) except for the fact that on track 5 i get a crackling noise. Wiggling the channel card doesn't stop the crackling and it seems to crackle with and without dbx. I think it only happens when the meter gets close to or is topping out. I have checked the electrical connections of the head and the head appears to be in good shape. Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

Have you demagnetized the heads and tape path? It could be a component, like a cap or resistor, but try demag first.

Here's what I'd try:

Does it do this if the track is just armed and not recording? (i.e. monitoring the
input)?
Is the crackle always present or intermittent? Have you double-checked the connections at the back of the machine?
Have you considered swapping two channel cards over to see if the fault moves?

I haven't tried demaging. I'll do that tonight. I haven't tested the machine during recording I could try that too. all I have done is played back tapes recorded on my other machine. I could always start swapping parts but I'm worried that I'd end up with 2 not working machines. :)
