When I'm recording drums on Reaper, I don't want to hear myself in the headphones; since the drums are loud enough anyway. But even when none of the tracks are armed, I can still hear myself through the mics. Maybe it's a soundcard issue? I use a Firestudio Mobile.

Hmm, does your Firestudio have a control panel on the computer that you can turn direct monitoring off with?

That could be it. How do I check the control panel? As you probably guessed, I'm not very tech savvy :o (I'm using a Mac btw)

My saffire pro 40 runs a program in the back that basically doubles all my tracks. I just go in and mute everything on the sound cards software.

what my band did was use the john bonham approach and just use one condenser mic about 6ft away and placed 2-3ft off the ground and its been working great. the best part about it is that this technique utilizes the drums natural balance and reverb of the room. Its also very cost effective in addition to being easy.
