Hello,

I got a brand new Zoom MRS-4 digital four track!!

This replaces my DCC deck to VCR combination.

I don't have to tell you how much fun I'm having.

Have a listen, let me know what's right, or wrong.

This is my first recording on this machine.

Song: Steely Jam

great stuff GT,

what's "jamming on the Dan"?

dtb

Thats a Steely Dan tune called "Do It Again" dtb.

He's jammin on steely dan!:)You must be one of those young whipper snappers!:D

my bad, not a big steely fan, I thought for a second he might have meant "jamming on the Dan"---River. I've done that many a nite. One of my music buds lives on the Dan River. We do a lot of jambing on the "Dan". And yeah, kinda young. 50ish

The Dan River runs thru Halifax Co. Virginia, and right thru the town of South Boston. Just a small little place on the earth where

JEFF and WARD BURTON are from.

ok, I'm sorry. Just had to do it.

G.T.

So you went with the Zoom. From all availible evidence, I'd say you made the right choice (and a few bones to spare).

Nice recording, it is exciting to know you have some upgraded tools at your disposal. The git chops were solid par usual and all accompaniments were right on.
Wanna talk about your procedure? Are you already tapping the Zooms potential? The quality sounds real pleasant to these peasant ears.

I'm leaving town tommorrow but, I'll check in a week to see if ya posted any new git soups to slurp.

Nice job. And you just got the damn thing!

Theron.

Thanks so much!!

To all who listened.

This was kind of a celebratory jam, as I was so happy to be leaving tape behind, and this little machine is just too cool.
God, no rewind, I LOVE IT!!

Plus I hadn't played my guitar for about a week, and it felt really good to just pick it up and jam.

I spent most of the last week installing the Zoom into a Raxxes pull out shelf. I had to go to a woodwork shop to have side panels cut to size.

Then I had to go to a machine shop to have a 1/4 inch thick alluminum top sheared to size, that would slide into small alluminum channels that were mounted to the wooden side panels.

I then painted the side panels flat black, and left the alluminum top natural mirror like finish. It really turned out nice. Maybe a pic later, if I can figure out how.

theron,

Thanks for the email, advice, and the fun of sharing my enthusiasm. I hadn't bought a recorder since DCC's were out, needless to say it was exciting.

Procedure wise: I wanted to use as much of the Zooms own built in sound as possible. I recorded the rythem git straight into the Zoom using the Zoom's own stereo chorus.

The drums are a Zoom 123.

The overall reverb is also built into the Zoom. I tried to use it sparringly. I thought someone would complain. Reverb is a touchy subjet around here, and rightfully so.

This machine has very limited guitar proccesing, and no distortion. So for the lead, I used my Pod with floorboard wah.

This was the first time I ever used midi. This allowed me to put the drums in when I wanted to to avoid bouncing. Great feature, midi!!

Sorry to ramble, can't help it, new toy!!

Midi scares the *** out of my **. For now I work with toddler loops and get pissed when I run out of options, so good job on latching onto the use with happy arms.
Do you ever mic the amp cabinet as aposed to going direct in through a pre or pod? This is not knock on pods, I just like your git playing and was wondering what your "amp tone" would be.
welcome to the digital world, be wary of the "red zone".
Peace and jive livin'
Theron.

Gotta mike?Put some vox on that thing!
Sound quality was excellent!Very nice to the ears!
I would sustain the chords on the chorus longer. It sounded somewhat abrupt!Just a thought though!Wah Guitar was quite cool.Nice work!

Always good to hear something nicely done with limited equipment.

Groovy dude.

theron,

I tried micing a cab on my Bassman awhile back. To get the sound I wanted, I had to turn it up to very uncomfortable levels.

This is one reason I like the Pod so much, less ear burn.

Midi for me so far, has just been simply to have the MRS-4 synced to my drum machine, so that I can record it in at any point of the tracking process. For saving tracks, and making for less bouncing, it's great. Pretty simple, really.

beezelbubba,

I haven't been practicing singing in awhile, so my singing at this point would only cause pain. This is the one thing, that's like piano lessons, when you'd rather play ball. Time for practice!!

The lack of sustain was due to dead clean recording of the rythem git, and maybe deadish strings. I like deadesh strings, they stay in tune better.

Scott,

My philosophy exactly!!!!

Thanks

GT

Track Rat,

I agree the Dan is high on my list too!!

Glad you liked it.

GT

Hey GT,

Did you record the bass yourself or use the bass sound on the zoom?
