...I'm not implying that I'm some human metronome or anything, but I usually track my drums last before vocals, so I'm used to playing along with existing music and click tracks. That's just how it sounds to me.

Whoa...that's pretty awesome...very metronomeish...

I just listened to version 2.1 , and all I can hear is Kick click! I know some people dig a kicky click, but I think this one is way over the top. Kicky clicks sound OK in metal, but I think for this style, something warmer and fatter would be better. Also, is the kick slowly swimming back and forth a little from L to R, or is it my imagination?

what's that washboard sound that comes in the L channel at 1:49ish? kind of distracting.

Mind you, I'm listening on cheap computer speakers, but those 2 things jumped out at me.

I have to agree with everyone. The guitars are great, playing and sound. NIce tune.

The drums sound like a totally different recording. They're the noyl thing holding this back. I'd consider seeing what it sounds like with no drums. It might work, because it's all about those guitars.

Okay...I really have to reevaluate my drum software!

I'm no drummer - I can hear beats in my head along to music but lack the sufficient coordination.

I like working with the PC Drummer 5...but evidently there is some serious issues with the drum sounds. Drumagog I really like and I'm on day 13 of the demo...I'll see if I can scratch up the money to purchase that software.

Andyhix gets the "where's waldo" for picking out the placement of some off the wall vibraphone drum line that I snuck in the bridge...

...and Rami thanks for throwing in your two cents and I may try a non-drum version of this song next.

Thanks guys!

I'm listening again. The kick is really the only thing bugging me at this point. I'd maybe calm it down a bit for the verses. Instead of straight 8th notes - 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & - maybe just a 1 (2) & 3. Would give it a bit more grove, and less of a driving rock feel. Personally I think that would fit the song better. Also, still too clicky for my taste, but I really don't dig on clicky kicks, so I might be in the minority here. See what others say about it.

Keep working on it, though, cuz it's really close to being a very good song.

Thanks Andyhix for the suggestions...

I used the drumagog kick drum straight and toned it down so it was a straight kick. (Since I'm not familiar with the software I can't remember what the knob names are and what they each do...but if you've used the software you may understand what I mean...)

The only effect on it was a encompassing compression (very slight) on all of the drum lines in audiosuite to keep the drums in check during the softer parts.

Should I single out the kick and do a low pass filter to knock down the clicky-ness?

That should work. I have no experience with any drum software, but that should do the trick. OR you could just find the exact prob frequency and cut that a bit too (experiment with various Qs). Anyway, thats al just based on my taste. If you (or your audience/listeners) like it, than leave it.

I listened through the headphones on the first mix and only once....the cymbals and the drums sounded good on them...I was tired too, it was the wee hours I think. BUT...all those excuses aside, after reading how everyone thought they sucked, I listened again and this time, on the monitors and the cymbals were really loud!!! And the drums did sound pretty fake....but good timing though...:D

Mix # 2.2..sounding much better..like the snare better and the cymbals are sounding great!!

Your acoustic playing is right on !!!

I really love the guitar lick you do around 2:14 right before the drum break at 2:20-2:31.....and that one little stretch there with guitar lick going into drum break and the way it starts back up is genius in my opinion and very memorable part of the song.

You got some mojo going on here.

True:)

Thanks Andyhix! I am starting to get a feel for how and when to apply EQ's...so I will experiment around a little bit.

Wow true...I appreciate the response and critique.

I almost scrapped that solo because it was a one take filler type thing because the complimenting bridge 2nd guitar seemed to be getting a little monotonous. During mix down I raised the volume so it stood out as more of a solo...so to hear that you like that, I am glad I kept it.

The drum break I came upon totally by accident...I forgot to come in right after the bridge...and ended up liking how it sounded. :D The only thing though it cut my song shorter so I had to go to a faster fade out than I originally planned on...heh.

Yea...that PC Drummer 5 program seems to be a real crutch to these songs. I've heard good things about EZ Drummer - so I may look into that.

What?
crutch, crotch, crunch, cruxs, croix?
