Hi, i have been reading some other posts but i am so new at recording its not helping.

I want to be able to record guitar and bass tracks on Sonar 4. How should i set up the inputs & what is the best hardware to get for this?

Thanks.

Give us some more info. I assume you have amps you're happy with for both guitar and bass? Do you have a mic for them? The Shure SM57 is a cheap, and probably has a better consensus than any other mic at being decent on guitar amps.

I assume you have a computer - does it meet Sonar's requirements - do you have a soundcard you can record with? Is sound quality enough of an issue that you need to put down $100+ on a better one? (ie, a Sound Blaster will work, but it won't be beautiful).

You'll probably need a seperate pre-amp, like MAudio Audio Buddy (another well-though-of cheapy - I use one). If you get a decent audio interface to replace your soundcard, you may be happy with its internal pre-amps, and not need to worry about this.

One way to get going is to get the SM57 and Audio Buddy, attach the mic to the pre-amp with an XLR cable, and attach the output from the pre-amp to your computer with a instrument (aka "guitar") cable to your soundcard in port (you'll proabably have to get a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter from radioshack to connect the cable to the soundcard).

But, I'm still just guessing at what you need until I know exactly what you have, and level of quality (and, of lesser importance, how expandable you want your rig to be).

Thanks, yes i have amps for guitar & bass. I have bought and installed sonar but when i went to record i got horrible sound quality as i was just using the mic jack on my motherboards soundcard. I really want to be able to do the guitar track, then go and do the bass track after. I really need to know what sort of sound card would best suit this and i have a couple of hundred to spend.
Thanks.

That should be enough to get a decent digital soundcard for your guitar and bass. I'm using an M-Audio Delta 44. It's an older card, but they have some good ones for around a couple of hundred

Echo has always been a good brand. Here is a link to their newest card I believe.

Can't tell if you are using a mic or using your guitar and bass amps as a preamp. Depending on the equipment, you will probabably get a better sound with the mic and preamp options suggested above, but playing direct is not totally unacceptable at all. Lot's of folks use a line6 amp emulation direct box approach to improve the direct box sound.

Also, until you get your soundcard/interface worked out, use the line in rather than the mic jack on your existing setup. The mic jack is made for those super cheap computer mics and have crappy preamps that add tons of noise. In the short term you ought to be able to get a better signal with the line in jack.

I would second the 44 as a good soundcard. If you need no more than 4 inputs, it works well. They have cards with more inputs, if needed, and they don't cost a whole lot more.
