I bought an RNP and an RNC. I know that this leapfrogs my mics, but that's a good problem to have for now.

So my signal path will now be:

- An MXL2003 for each channel (each turned off axis for stereo)

- thru Blue Kiwi cables

- to the RNP with RNC loop

- out into Monster 1/4", then into RCA jacks (I know, unbalanced)

- into my Tascam CDRW4U

- direct to CD. One take, no mixdown.

It may still sound like crap (still working on the room), but whatever I get oughtta be CLEAN.
 
Dude... sometimes the plunge is all you got. Any point of entry takes you in deeper.

Not yet, it'll arrive Friday and I'll see what it can do over the weekend. (I'm sure y'all do NOT want to hear what my little Behringer mixer sounds like.)

I'm also pleased to say that I've since inspired my friend (the better musician of the pair of us), and he is now starting his research into a 'back end' for this stuff, some sort of stand-alone multitrack recorder/mixer to take the place of the Tascam. That way I'll own the inputs and he'll own the processing.

Any recommendations for such a unit? I hadn't allowed myself to begin to look into it until now. We're happy with fewer tracks, bells and whistles in exchange for significantly higher fidelity per $. Is there a badass no-frills model that gets it RIGHT?

Also, how many of these units run really quiet? My Tascam is absolutely silent (particularly compared to any computer), and it'd be a shame to have to quarantine a new unit in a separate room.
 
I have, love, and use a lot, a Korg D1600 DRS. I use it sitting at my left hand while recording vocals with no noise problem at all. They are about $1400 USD and are coming out with a new version shortly that has a blue screen rather than the orange one and with USB instead of SCSI that mine has; it also has a touch screen. They also make a D1200 for about $1000 USD, which has a blue screen and USB but it doesn't have a touch screen. I find the touch screen to be extremely handy and wouldn't want to be without it now.

In addition, there is an exceptionally helpful user group for Korg DRS recorders at www.korgboards.com where you can get great help and information about using them.

I LURVE my Akai DPS16. 24/96khz sampling, the greatist human interface out of all the portastudio type stuff and a very functional digital mixer in there. It sounds better IMO than the equiv roland stuff and has some efx that are better than alot of other gear of that price point. You could probably get one used for a song.
 
you didnt say what your budget is , but there are many excellent
options, three are the Roland vs series, the akia dps, and the korg, you can check out vsplanet.com for all info you could want
for the rolands, you will also find links to the akia board as well,
these are all great units which can make excellent recordings, there options however are quite different.
