I think there has been some discussion that the "Foam By Mail" guys have totally lied about the absorption properties

Exactly. Their absorption data is fraudulent. Fabricated. Pulled out of thin air. Copied from Auralex. And so forth. :D

So uh... anybody want 60sqft of packing foam?

SURE! I need some to protect the Auralex foam I'm sending out lol. I can always use that stuff to make my bed feel softer..

Thanks to all who've contributed on this so far!

Not sure where I could find the fiberglass, but I'm sure some searching will turn up a source in LA.

Any thoughts on the foam type? Seem to range from about $40 for 8' worth of corners to up into the $300 range.

Of course with one real trap going for $199... building them or making due with foam might not be that bad for my 'budget' studio.

I don't approve of your avatar, but I'll help you anyway ;)

Anyway, look here for some companies to purchase from.
You're looking for the Owens Corning 703 or 705 rigid fiberglass (not the fluffy kind...that'll be a bitch to work with).

Also, look here for some links to DIY sites (at the bottom of the page)

Can't imagine why?

Anyway, I do appriciate the links. I found one source that's about 40 miles from my house. I'll call out there and see if they have it before making the drive. Hard to believe there isn't something a little closer to south LA though... may check the pricing on line.

I do plan on swinging by Home Depot this evening to pick up the wood for the frames and the wife has offered to go to a fabric store with me this weekend to buy the fabric. I'm guessing just about anything that is relatively acoustically transparent should work.

Maybe it comes in Cardinal & Gold...

OK,

Here's my basic idea for building bass traps.

I can put 4"x2'x4' traps in three of the four room courners.

I can put 2"x18"x4' traps on the wall/ceiling joing behind my mixing position (initial reflection) and behind my monitors. Since these will be mounted into 45-degree joints, I could maybe make the ceiling traps 4" but not for the whole surface.

Because of the orientation of the door, I can't put anything in the final corner of the room.

Thoughts on how effective this will be?

BTW, while at home depot I stopped by the Pro desk and asked them about ordering some 703 for me... we'll see.

your mixes will benefit g r e a t l y !

You can really not have too many bass traps..

Make sure all the boxes are sealed air tight..thats crucial..and have fun!..

well, not really. You still want to use a porous covering that allows air through it. The sound has to travel through it and be absorbed in the fiberglass. You could even just skip the frame or covering and just set the rigid fiberglass in the corners...but this isn't good for aesthetic or health purposes.

maybe you're thinking of panel absorbers? it sounds like he's just going after some simple DIY bass traps to place in the corners and ceiling joints.

Your plan should work. OC705 with the foil backing is more dense and actually a little better for absorbing lows.

I'm seeing reference to both OC705 and OC703. With a room as small as mine, I want as much bass absorbtion as possible while using as little space as possible. The plan I mentioned above will give me 24 sqft of 4" thick traps (in 3 of the corners) and 12 sqft of 2" thick traps (on the ceiling/wall area).

Since it would be tough to give up more space than that, would I get more "bang for my space" with 705 than 703?

As for being air tight... all the plans I've seen talk about maximum exposure of the fiberglass. One guy even drilled hundreds of 1" holes in his 4" frames to allow more exposure (and probably to make them lighter).

BTW, just had a call from Home Depot saying they couldn't get any of the rigid fiberglass I'd asked about (owens, safe'n'sound, etc.).

Um, in the good sense or bad?

as in the "outdated synth sounds" sense
:D

I love the videos overall, I just laugh each time I hear the intro music though.

btw, I really like the wood panels your partner Doug did to his studio in the MiniTraps demo. They look great.
BTW, in your "HOW TO SET UP AND TREAT A LISTENING ROOM" video, you said if people showed interest in seeing videos of how you set up some customer's rooms you'd think about doing more....I for one would love to see that!
