Now see Rod? If I listened to you I woulda spent 27...28 bucks on a "cheap battery powered amp", when we now know know that I can go to the Shack and get an aircraft band radio proly for like....23 fiddy..Whadda ya think I'm MADE of MONEY?!!....:D I'm just kiddin ya bud. That was good thinkin too, and the headphone idea is a great one. I got a pair of Senns that'll work pufik !
:D:D:D I'm feelin GOOD boys !! We're in the game now ! This is gonna be a gas. I'm gonna drive up to all my neighbors, get out and scan 'em with my aircraft band radio, just like at the airport. "No. It's ok mamm. You're clean."..........:D

BigTom mentioned e-fences waaaay back at post #6. Two of those first six were in reference to rabbits, and a goat. Sorry for not taking you more seriously then bigtom. Mamma aways said, "ya just. don't. LISTEN!! "

.........hey KaKed. When you invented radar, why the hell didn't you make it
bulletproof??....Do I have to think of EVERYTHING?....uh oh.......I think.....the cops r here.....again.......

 DAAAm I'm good. I just said, "That? That's HER gun !" It's cool. I'll bail er out in the morning. I'm kinda tired...........:)

Thanks again to everybody who pitched in here. I'll post here again, after I search out the short.

Like I said - portable battery operated guitar amps (great for a weekend in the woods and you can still play) for about 35 bucks........ 33 for a Fender - Danelectro as cheap as 20.

Look at ZZounds for examples

Yes! I'm familiar with the guitar nuts website, and I've been planning to shield all my guitars as soon as possible, but since we've moved in here, we've been pretty busy trying to make this thing livable. Could be next winter before I get to that project....Does the paint idea really work? Or should I plan to do metal shielding in my cavities. hmm again.

Shielding paint absolutely works. It's what custom guitar builders use because it's cheaper in bulk and takes less time to apply. If you're just doing a few guitars the copper foil would be more economical. Also make sure your guitars' wiring is in good shape.

Here's a link on how to shield a bass. Guitar isn't really any different.

ok, check it out. Today, I went out to the mailbox, and there's a little box inside from my rich sister in Florida. She wrote "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!!" on it. So I opened it, and there's this little camera inside, and a note. "Please send pictures of the shithole your're living in. It may improve my mood." .....GAAAAD I love her!! Cool camera though. Olympus Stylus 1033 SW.
Little "point and shoot" digi deal, but the manual say's I can DIVE with it to 33 feet.....( I'd be dead at.....8 ).....shockproof to 5 feet ( I'll be testing that a LOT!), works at 14 degrees, takes 30 minute movies with zooom, 30 minute land movies with audio! and get this, manual says, "after use, submerge in water for ten minutes, and run water flow directly on all moving parts to clean......I'm pretty happy. I'm gonna send my sister a picture of a dog turd toNIGHT, and tommorow, I'll send her the actual tird....ok...yea..We have an... odd relationship....anyway check it out. I just looked on-line. It's about 3 bills....

So yea electrocution is cool...... We tried it on Beddy, ( Her name is actually Betty, but the "t's" pissed her off.) Now electroCUTion, she likes. Go figure.............Beddy ALLways smells like a beer.........eeeeeezy Kake...:)
(don't worry . We haven't let er drive since she wrecked the truck....and bit the deputy.....but he shouldn't have tried to cuff her.....EEEEeeezy Kake....:))
Seriously though, this is interesting stuff, about fences and what not, thanks for the links cake...( er do you prefer Kaked.... I AIN't gonna type out cakewalkKaKed all the time! ) and it's a LOT like my problem, but ya know what would be great? If we could actually hear what these people are hearing, well, we'd become the ghost busters of the RFI world! I believe I did find a cheap radio on-line, it's like 9 bucks, but it doesn't say anything about "air-band", just SW...Anybody know if an SW radio plays "air-band', as in traffic control"? hmm.....I think I will pick up a battery amp though as well if they're that cheap. Which one sounds the most like a 3 thousand dollar Marshall stack?....:D Seriously though Rod, have you listened to any of these little buggers? Any idea which one might sound best? Outdoors? I'd proly use an acoustic.....I'll probly try the Fender.... BTW, the little Super Champ XD really surprised me with it's acoustic setting. As good as some "acoustic amps" I've heard....
And I'm glad I ran into you as well as the rest of these guys Andy! I've been wanting to talk to someone who's had first hand experience with cavity shielding ever since I stumbled across the guitar nuts web site.....YEars ago. So you've tried both methods? In similar quality guitars? Side by side, both ways? PLEEZe tell me yes. Sure would be easier to paint it on, so much easier that I don't care how much more it would cost, and that, from a guy who sqeaks when he walks. I've got a bunch of em to do, and a Bass as well....Sure would be nice to get em done quick!....who knows?..MIGht just solve my #$%$@*&&*-&*%$#-$%$#$.."tick"......

ok gentamins. I gotta go find a tird....and a box. Talk to yaz later!

For what it's worth.....
An old wise man once helped me with a problem I was having with a radio station bleeding in on a church sound system I had just Installed.
He said, "There are three items required for this to happen".
1-A Transmitter (The radio Station)
2-A receiver (or some circutry in the mixing board, amp, tape deck, etc. acting as one)
3-An Antenna

"Get rid of any one of the above, and problem solved.

You can't get rid of the Radio station and You have no Idea what is acting as a receiver. So lets try and get rid of the Antenna".

"Go to Radio Shack and buy their assortment of small "Disc Capacitors".
Run through each cable in your installation and short the hot and ground, with the capacitor leads, untill the problem goes away".

I don't know why this works, but I finally found that the cable run from the board to the tape deck was the problem. I fastened the "cap" permenately
into the installation and never had a problem again. I guess by introducing the capacitor either got rid of the antenna or the receiver circutry.

The capacitor value doesn't seem to matter.
I don't know if you can relate this info to your situation, but I thought it was worth a try.

Still dying to know what you find out !

so Thunder....you don't like my new song? .....I was thinkin' maybe a reggae beat.......about 55bpm.........
okFINE!! I'll go back on my medication.......

I was going to suggest that you record everything in multiples of 55 and you will have a nice click track.

a wise man indeed adwaz. Just like fire; heat, fuel and O2, take one away.......
In my case, we're thinkin that my transmitter is an electric fence, ( maybe a dog fence ), I guess my pick-ups would be the antenna, and my guitar amps, the reciever, which is necessary in order to playback, or reproduce, the original signal. So, it's pretty simple. All the fences gotta go...:) ....I'm no electronics wizz, but here's my thinking on what you've said. A capacitor, or "cap", is an electronic devise that stores voltage until it's needed. A disc cap, is a small one, that stores a small amount of voltage. I don't doubt what you've said for a second, I'm sure that would work in some if not many situations, but here's the thing. When we add e-components to our signal chain, the signal is going to be in some way, altered. For the spoken voice situation , as in the church you worked on, the difference would undoubetly be so small, that no one would ever notice, but before I alter the sound of my guitars, I'm gonna want to know exactly what I'm gaining, or losing. Also, the idea of shorting hot to ground on my guitars, ....weeeell, ..I don't think so. Sure don't wanna mess with a brand new amp.....no...I think all the fences gotta go. Better still, as soon as I can devise a test devise, I'm gonna see if I can find out what's wrong with the fences, and then fix em....Anybody got some more intelligent thoughts than mine on adwaz's idea?
very interesting....

Thanks for the input adwaz !! and don't worry, I won't leave you guys hangin'. When we solve the $#&%$-&**%$%^^&$##@#!!!! tick problem, we're gonna get us a jug, dress up the goat and PARty !!

Tic-Tok, Tic-Tok, Tic-Tok.....Coo Coo

Z,
I spend every day trouble shooting audio problems.
Lets try and fix the problem and then determine wheather it's gonna affect your sound. A "pico fared" cap in parrell with your guitar shouldn't be detectable by the Human Ear. Back to the basics....
Transmitter- Doppler or electric fence. Right?
Receiver-Guitar pups (amp on with cord plugged in but not hooked to guitar) no tick...tick...Right?
Only when guitar is plugged in to the amp you get the tick....tick Right?
If this is not correct, let me know.

Doesn't really matter, just points you in the right direction.....

This fix of mine was 15 years ago and I can't remember all the details. That was in Golden, CO. I also recall a situation in Hope, AR that required the same fix.

Just see if you can make it go away by hooking a very small cap in paralell with line in, line out, speaker level or even 120V AC. It won't hurt a thing!
Here is my Bunch-of-Caps that I still carry around today....I will send you some if you want.....

Find the fix then determine how to deal with it. You may never be able to turn off all the FENCES......But you still want to record...............

well adwaz, ya sure got my attention ! Why didn't cha say you were a ekspert! You're absolutely right. No guitar, no tick, and it sure would be a lot easier to hook up a cap, rather than to try to find, and then keep up with problems with fences as they arise all the time! Was I close? A disc cap holds a little juice right? and you say I could hook it up anywhere....just connect one lead to a hot terminal and one to negative?..That simple?.. Could you give me a value range that I could look for? See, I'm a moron. Well, at least when it comes to electronic components. Awfully kind of you to offer to send me some caps, but I'll run to the Shack on Monday, and we'll know quick! ...see if you can help me out just a little more....should I start with a guitar? ...or the power cord on my amp....easiest would be to unscrew the cover on a cord jack, just cross hot to ground...right?.......if it works, I could then solder one inside my amp, at the input jack?.....
This is sounding better by the damn minute....
Thanks adwaz!
