Thoughts on "relicing" or reliced guitars

I started this thread to facilitate and open discussion on the subject. If I think it's neat and artsy, or even cool, so what. I'm glad you all expressed your opinions about it. I wanted to see what everybody thought about it, not just yourself. That is all I have to say about that. Post I don't give a shit

Seven to one, and I was number seven.;)

Seriously if you want to have a go at it. The best advice I can give you is get some junkers first and practice on them. Odd as it may sound distressing an old piece is easier and the best way to learn. With finishing, and relicing, distressing, whatever, is just finishing, the golden rule is always practice on scrap first.

Good luck with it.

Now, cubic zirconia is a completely different deal. ;)

For $100 you can impress idiots who can't tell the difference, and that think half a gram of a common crystal is actually worth $10,000. :D

Sorry dude, you asked us to express our thoughts, so I gave my opinion too. I happen to think it's dumb. You happen to think it's cool. You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but I happen to disagree with you, so if you're asking what I'm thinking, I'm certainly not going to hold back, you know?

To reiterate, I'm glad you all expressed your opinions. The point of all of it was to get more than one opinion. I have an old cheap epiphone lp that looks cool but is actually warped-- although you can't tell from looking at it from afar. It was stuck in a flood in my basement. For years I hung onto the thing thinking I would repair it one day. I'll probably just experiment on that and stick it on the wall in my music room as a decoration. I'll leave my new tele alone.

Well, you got seven opinions - they just all happen to be in agreement. ;)

Good call on the Epi as a starter - you don't want to screw up a new Tele.

I bought my oldest son (5Years Old) a little electric guitar a few years ago. The 5year old and 2 year old had that puppy reliced the RIGHT way in no time at all. Leave your guitar in a kidergarden class for a week and they will take care of it free of charge.

With the 1 foot thick ceramic coating on Teles, it is impossible to screw one up. That is one instrument that CANNOT be reliced with anything less than a sledgehammer and welding torch.

oh i dont know....i have a tele with a nitro finish and its chipping everytime i look at it...which is a good thing ...

i acctually have a mix of poly ..nitro and reliced guitars and i just see them as guitars in various stages of decay...it would be nice if my relic had got there the old fashioned way but i really dont see it in a lesser light...but i do like my guitars to be a little bit screwed up ..some rust ..some wear ..everyday they all get more comfortable...but poly guitars do not lend themselves at all to what i would call ageing gracefully.

A lot of the newer fender tele's have polyurethane on them too and they can be delicate little flowers. Ask telepaul I seem to remember he has one that was "relicing" itself out of the box no help required:eek:

"relicing" (mutttley got it right: distresssing) is really just another finish. THe integraty issue only comes when you try and pass the distress finsindhed guitar as being vintage. Hey EVH painted his own stuff on his ax Joe Strummer put stickers on his. (he also played the hell out of that tele but different story. Diffferent strokes for different folks. BTW, my family collects rare antiques and i have seen some seroius woodsmiths and refinishers apply their trade and the skill level to do a fine job excists with a rareified few. Thanks be well all. Oh, my opinion, I think they look cool but I like my gtrs clean and shiny unless they once belonged to Joe Strummer.
