We hooked a clock (a $1500 one) that we borrowed up to a delta... the playback and stuff on already recorded tracks got cleaner, but the big difference to us was on the stuff that was started from scratch.
Musicians friend has the genx6 for $449 right now... thats the best I've seen, but I havent really looked much...

Also why does a clock improve the converters? (sound) I don't see how it would make it better, what do you hook the clock up too besides the soundcard...? do you think a dedicated converter would make more difference than a clock?...or what's better in comparison, if you could only go one way.
This has got me really curious, I'd probably will upgrade my delta1010 in the future, better to know now, how I'll do it...

An unreliable/unsteady clock causes jitter. Better clock = less jitter = better sound.

thanks for the info. I paid $465 for mine, which was the best price last week. I should be getting it on monday.
I would not be surprised if it increased the resolution of the converters. @$450, it better. Also, being a dedicated clock means that it will have almost perfect jitter specs.

I think a clock should be first before converters. Cos The clock improves 8 ads and also 8 das. The converters will only give you two channels of improvement, and a slight one at that.

I took a look at the genx6 on lucid's website. It says about the unit - "With the flip of a switch it operates as a stand-alone clock source, generating Word Clock or Superclock at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz." Does this mean that using this unit as your clock source you wouldn't be able to record at sample rates higher than 48kHz? Seems like its primary purpose is to distribute clock info rather than generate.

The clock was an aardvark box... the Delta 1010 is not mine it was someplace else... and, the aardvark card doesnt have a clock input on it.

The genx6 distributes as well as generates. I will be using it for clock generation since I don't have a clock that I want to distribute.
You are right. Clocking with the genx6 means that you can't record at rates higher than 48.

To me it doesn't seem worth the investment if you can't use it to record above 48K. Right now I record at 48K, but I figure with falling storage and CPU prices, within a year I'll want to be at 88 or 96. If anyone can suggest a good clock in the same price-range that does go up to 96K, I'm all ears.

Anyhow, I got the genx6 today.
Bugger. I could not get the delta 1010 to lock to the genx6. Not good, then midiman's network is down or something.

What if you get a Lucid AD9624 converter, and sync the delta to it. Would you get improved performance on the Delta because it is running off the Lucid's clock?

Noticeable improvement. Very mild though. But for those who want only the best, its worth it.
the highs were more powerful. Definitely more space around instruments. bass was a "tad" more powerful. Things were also a tad smoother.
I don't plan to buy an ad9624 just to use it to talk between a genx6 and a delta 1010 though.

Be sure to post the fix-it for your clocking problem...
did you contact midiman and Lucid both? Someone should be able to help pretty quickly...

can't you sync the 10/10 to the converter without using the genX?
(Through a clock out, or through spdif connection)
Also I was reading something that claimed that clock jitter has much more noticable effect on D/A conversion than on A/D. IE, it will affect playback more than recording.

you can do that. But with a unit like the ad9624, it will not be practicable since you have to sync via spdif. You dont get the best quality when you carry audio and sync over the same line at the same time.
About the improvements. I made my recording friend tell me the differences between the delta clock and genx6.
He could not tell any difference in playback( I could), but he definitely noticed a difference in recording. He immediately noticed more focused highs(even though he does not think that the improvement is worth the $500)
