Well, perhaps I don't deserve to be a 'junior member', but this is a question I have.

Is a mic preamp ONLY made for mics? I ask because I want to get a preamp for my synth (dont ask why, it's a long discussion).

So, do I need a mic pre, or is there another pre that is specifically made for other instruments like a synth?

I would love to know of some good examples...some have mentioned to me about the Audio Buddy.

I feel your pain

I too have a Roland keyboard and I need to ramp up the volume to get a decent level to record. I use the trim on my mixer to make the signal hotter and then go to the my Layla24. I have everything set at +4 which explains the needed extra gain. The Audio buddy would appear to work since the specs show it has 40dB Max for the instrument gain. I never need to put that much gain into the signal to get a good recording level.

I'm new also so this could just be blowing smoke up your a** but my setup has worked so far. You would just be inserting the Audio Buddy where I use my mixer. Sorry if this wasn't too helpful.

Yo Diminuative Chip:

I have used my mic pre for my synths, my drum machine, and vocals. You can use a mic pre to record your girlfriend/wife snoring or use it for about anything you want to record. A good mic pre is a great asset.

Yep, you can use a mic preamp for any instrument. Some preamps have 1/4" inputs for line (i.e. instrument) levels, with a switch to turn off the +4 db gain. It is often beneficial to use a decent mic preamp instead of a mixer's preamps because many mixers color the sound or the on board preamps are inadequate.

I use my Art Tube Studio preamp for recording all my instruments, and my mixer as a headphone amp to monitor the output.
