Is it because:
Gibsons suck?
people realize they suck as players?
people suck in the money managing dept.?
people trying to pawn their sucky guitars on someone else?
:laughings::laughings::laughings::laughings::laughings:

Edit - added the introductory question. I don't hate Gibsons and don't think they suck. I'd just like to know why so damn many of them are on eBay.

ummm, there is 3 times as many Fenders. Does that mean they suck 3 times as much?

I'm sorry but how the fuck is this a $23,000 guitar?

Because there were less than 300 of them made to begin with and much fewer than that survived unmolested to today.

It's called supply-and-demand.

Look it up.

If that guitar was 100% original you probably couldn't touch it for under $100,000.

Times are tough and half of those 3 billion people just need the cash to survive!

An original 58 LP is a better investment than real estate.

Look it up!

I thought that they were running hand in hand for they aren't making either any more! ;)

3 billion... that's one for every man on the planet, just about.... scary!

Guitars don't suck, players suck, and more sucky players play Fenders.

Gibsons are nice guitars but they are generally overpriced IMO. They crank those things out in no time (3 weeks) in batches at the factory and charge $4,000. I can get a concert level hand made classical for that price that took a master craftsman 2 years to build.

two years? maybe from beginning to end but it wasn't two solid years. $2000 a year isn't a very good living.

Gibsons do not suck. The new stuff isn't as cool as the old, but they are still great guitars. I would guess there are a bunch on there right now because people need money. Most fenders aren't worth a tone used, so people hang on to them.

They make them in batches of 4 - 5 or 6 batches a year ($80-100K in total revenue). Still not a lot of money but this is pretty typical for a hand made classical. Luthiers make money on the side doing maintenance until they get good enough to charge a lot for their guitars.

I've seen a Les Paul made. By comparison, there is not much to it.

As wood ages, its character changes, how it responds to vibration, changes that also come from many years of being played. Also the availability of high quality wood to start with is different now than it was is the 50's. The difference may be subtle, but a skilled player can tell the difference. It's much more evident in acoustic instruments, why 100+ yr old violins, cellos, and basses command huge prices.

But just because it's a '58 doesn't automatically make it special. You have to play it to tell the difference. Otherwise, it's just an investment to save until you get a higher price for it.

I am thinking you meant to type "ton," but your apparent typo makes for a darn good pun.

haha. I love fender tone. I have a couple of gibson guitars, a few fenders, some frankensteins...as well as a number of good amps. I find myself using fender guitars and fender amps more than any other guitar or amp. I love that high end shimmer.
