Hello

I want to upgrade and as many before me I don't know what I want.

This is what I have

Fostex vf160
Mackie cfx 16
m-audio 5a
akg perception 200
mxl 990

So what i am wondering is I have some money burning a hole in my pocket.

One should I add the Lexicon MPX-550
or the M-Audio TAMPA.

From my current setup which would I benifit from more considering they are both about the same price.
I do need better effects then what the cfx or the fostex can do and I need a better pre-amp but which
of the two is the best bang for the buck.

This kind of things comes up all the time, and it's tough to answer. I record to ADAT now, but I used to have the original Boss BR8, which wrote to zip disks. I'd imagine that's somewhere in the ballpark of your Fostex thing.

I upgraded from Behringer board pre's to a blue tube, and at the time, I couldn't tell the two apart in recordings. I went from using a AKG2000 to a Groove Tubes AM61 tube mic, and I did hear a difference with that. It wasn't a night and day change, but definitely a difference.

I have a Tampa and love it. Again, it's not a night and day change over a blue tube or a DMP3, but when I have lots of tracks, they just all "fit" together now rather than fight with each other. Only used with ADAT, never with the BR8.

I hated the effects in the Boss BR8, they sounded like garbage.

So...what kind of music do you play? If it's all acoustic instruments and you don't really use effects that heavily, then you may want to get a $400 mic rather than a $400 effects processor. If you play techno stuff and love the effects, then maybe the processor is the way to go. That's up to you.

I go through this too (I trade things all the time on ebay looking for the "ideal" set up...which probably doesn't exist). Start first with what you want to accomplish and what doesn't sound so great to you, then buy stuff. Or if you have extra money, just buy what sounds the most fun. That's what this is all about anyway....

Hello

Thanks for the advice. I am testing the water of the recording and enjoying it. I have cut a couple of demos for some local artist, but I am realize quickly that my gear is lacking. I bought the AKG thinking it was an AKG then it turns out to be made in china. I thought that would be a problem but as to now it seems to work pretty good, then again I have never worked with anything better. I have been working on the acoustic of my room and in the process of getting some treatment for the room. But as I spend more on gear I am trying to get modorate gear. I really don't invision myself making a career out of this but I would like to be able to cut better demos althought I do them for free.

I like my fostex but the trim is difficult to set, and the mackie well if I can pay 300 dollors and get better pre amp then it is worth it. Also the effects well are limited and not that great.

So I guess maybe the question should change which of the two pieces of gear would I benifit more from in the long run. The lexicon or the tampa.

Thanks

Sorry, I really don't have too much more useful advice for you...I haven't had that much gear. Based on what I've read around here, either choice will be something that you will use for a while after you upgrade other stuff.

good luck!
