I shall say no more lest I blast into a tirade about elitism. Plus I don't actually know any metallers who can't play punk rock. Each to their own tho.
Not to mention that "punk" today isn't even close to the real punk of the 70s and early 80s. It's a pseudo, watered down, vegetarianized, commercialized version that doesn't have the same attitude as the original punk scene. There's no way it can since that scene doesn't exist anymore. It will never be like the original.
To prove my point, the original punk scene was about "not really being able to play an instrument, just enough to play a song." So, for someone to even invoke talking about skill proves that they are not true punk. To say that someone of another genre doesn't have the skill to play punk completely negates their position. If anything, it should be the exact opposite. Original punk players didn't consider themselves musicians. They were just angy guys in a band.
If you asked the drummer from the Sex Pistols a question about how he played something, he'd have poured his beer on you.
