I had some individual thanks all typed out but I lost the changes. I got all sidetracked by work, since I'm at work and all...but seriously thanks guys, I appreciate the input. And I agree that frequency analyzers are like trying to "hear with your eyes"...maybe there are some people that get good use out of them but I think that I illustrated why they don't do me much good!
Oh, and to get Reaper to do run sound from a session while still recording voice...I set it up so I could send the output of one project tab into the input of another. It involved enabling an undocumented feature of Reaper, because ReaRoute didn't work for this purpose. ReaRoute is, however, awesome for sending audio/MIDI into and out of Reaper to other apps.
- find your Reaper resource directory (go to Options->Show Reaper Resource Path in Explorer). That'll open the folder where reaper.ini lives. Edit that file and add the line "rearoute_loopback=8" under the [reaper] section. That'll give you 4 stereo ins/outs or 8 mono ins/outs. You can specify however many you want (not sure what the max is). I stuck with 8 for starters. This disables any ReaRoute ins/outs that you may have created during Reaper installation.
- Create a new project, or open an existing project. This will be the project that you want to show everybody. I'll call it ShowProject.rpp
- Open a new project tab, then create a new project on that tab. This will be the project that captures your audio. I'll call it Capture.rpp
- go ahead and save both projects, so they'll have a path to record into.
- On ShowProject.rpp, click the I/O button on your Master track. Add a new hardware output, and choose "Loopback Output 1 & 2" as the destination. You can also mute the existing hardware output to your monitors if you like. Once you get it all set up, you'll see the drawbacks to muting it, and the drawbacks to not muting it.
- On Capture.rpp, create a new track and set it to a stereo input of "Loopback Input 1 & 2". If you muted the other project's master hardware output, you should enable monitoring here.
- In Capture.rpp, add another track and set the input to your microphone that you're using for commentary.
- Arm both tracks on Capture.rpp, and hit record.
- Flip over to the ShowProject.rpp tab, and now you can stop/start/whatever and everything that's sent out of the Master bus will be picked up in the background by Capture.rpp, which is still recording.
- I used OBS to record my screen. After recording, I imported the video file into Capture.rpp, lined it up through some trial and error (I never got it to record audio, so clapping didn't work as a sync cue...I just loudly clicked on the mouse a few times to maximize/minimize a window and used that to sync the video to the audio).
- Just remember to flip back to Capture.rpp and stop recording
Hopefully it works for you if you give it a try. I was blowing my mind about how to use Reaper in a demo, while recording commentary over the top of it. I thought I was gonna have to use a 2nd computer, which would have been a drag. Fortunately this seems to have worked well!

It took hours of fiddling, reading, googling, trial and error to do it the first time. But I bet that the 2nd time will MUCH easier. As long as I don't forget all of that...
Jeez, just finding screen recording software that was free and didn't suck ass took a couple of hours. And it seriously took 2 hours of trial and error to get that damn text banner to come across (turns out the easy way is to use the JS script "Video Processor" that's included with Reaper).
So yeah, yesterday was a day full of hate-googling and yelling awful things at my computer.
The day before that was spent trying to troubleshoot what turned out to be a greasy smudge across my camera's lens

I think that may be the better option for me too...
.But I think I will try it, as I have been messing with a cheap little camera I have, so eventually, I'm gonna do a vid....I'm still pondering on some things for the vid, but the tips posted here have really helped me understand a lot more than I did before about it...
I'll have to wait until tomorrow, as my room's a wreck right now with the ISO cab & PPC112 that actually sold for me through Reverb (thanks for the heads-up Tad!!!). I couldn't give these things away last year for the 6-8 months or however long it was that I tried to sell 'em there. What I really can't believe is there were more offers for that ISO cab than anything else I've put up...
shocking, to me at least, & while I'm not getting near what I paid for any of it (which I knew I wouldn't), I'm at least getting part of it back that can go to other stuff...I think it'd be cool for you to show off your wall of amps myself Greg, but that's just me....

I tried the drag-n-drop thing, but it would always hang & freeze for some reason. If I use the "import" thing, it seems to work, for me...I have to convert the videos I've made to mp4 or they won't work either...

Yeah, I've been using mp4 exclusively so far. Fortunately that's the default format that my camera records video in. Installing VLC seems to have enabled Reaper to use it, before then the video would load but it'd just be a black screen.

Yeah, complete meltdown there. I can record a video and record audio... Just need to work out how to overlay the two of them on each other... Preferably muting the audio that comes with the video.

Get a video editing program if you want to do video - save yourself a lot of work IMO. The audio just becomes one of the tracks. Simples. I'm sure there's decent freebies / cheapies out there. I use Sony Vegas, but I'm sure there are cheaper options.

Yeah and it was confusing at first. I didn't understand how you could use it with any cab, any amp setting. It's not specific to any load, so I didn't know what I needed to set the amp at. The Weber people were vague and used marketing speak in my emails, but I just took their word for it and let er rip. It's been about a year now and everything is fine. I set my amps to whatever the cab is and just go. The gigantic ceramic rheostat and internal speaker motor somehow balance everything out to whatever the amp is set at, so the cab really doesn't matter. It's some voodoo shit, but it works great, so no worries. I've used it extensively and all is well. Cranked Plexis at smallish venues? No problem!

Yeah, I did look through our thread here, but it's so long I figured it'd be just as fast just to ask you here dude...
I've been looking at those things for quite a while, & with the amp I have now, it really wouldn't make sense to have one, because the DSL has a master for each channel...But, I'm wondering how an attenuator would work with the Chupa in plexi mode, whenever I get that thing back...I know that amp has the 2 different modes, but they're not quite like the plexi mode, & to get the goods on that channel/era, you've gotta crank it up to get the goods...
Plus, if I got an attenuator, I could get other amps later on I could use it with...Just something I've been curious about & wanting to try for a long time...
