how about a multi pattern mic???

The two ways I know to do a multipattern is with a dual-diaphragm microphone which can be done with electronic switching, or with a single-diaphragm microphone by incorporating a mechanical switch to alter the vents to the backplate. Neither of those things is likely to happen in an XLR connector with a 6mm electret capsule ;)

A 6418 tube is rated at 15-30V plate and 10mA filament current. The MSH-4 manages the 15V plate OK, so it is not starved plate. I could only squeeze out about 8mA filament current, so it's a little hungry . . . but that served my goal of building a mic that had some nice second-order harmonic distortion (please note the 2% THD!).

What did you use to test, and how do you know it's second order? Just curious.

Cool stuff, by the way. I think it's cute that you stuck a little tube in there. I have no doubt that it does absolutely nothing useful other than take up space ... but a cute idea, nonetheless.

God forbid you give him a chance to explain how it works before making an assumption and busting his balls...

He's had an entire thread at his disposal to explain it, and I'm still waiting. :D

I even brought the topic up already. I'm with chess, I'm not sure tube's really going to make a difference but I'm still probably going to order a pair.

Exactly. For 55 bucks, who even cares if he just stuck a little piece of glass on it and called it a tube mic?

Cesscock is an idiot, best left ignored. Im surprised that more people havent found that out by now.

What's the matter, Ray? Does competition for "Biggest Asshole in the Audio World" make you uncomfortable? I'm sure you'll be #1 soon, don't worry. You obviously have talent for it.

youve gone and hurt my feelings now, Ford Van. :( and in true ford van style, you leave unsigned red chicklets.

Yeah, mshilarious is just a street hustling snake oil salesman with this "claimed" tube mic. When I get mine to test I'm going to do a track with the tube in and then another track after I cut out the tube with my wire snips to compare. Dunno though, it's probably made so bad that it won't even work if I take the damn fakey tube out, unless I like know how to solder and stuff. I betcha he's just repackaging all those crap MSH-1As he couldn't unload, but now with a fakey tube attached just to double-sell to the same customers who were suckered into buying the MSH-1A. He said he had a business degree didn't he? You can't trust any marketing weasel with a business degree. I'M CALLING YOU OUT MSHILARIOUS!!!!!

You need to fucking settle down. I pesonally have never heard of a tube mic without a power supply and even mshilarious said the tube was somewhat hungry which leads me to believe it's not going to have quite the same characteristics of a tube mic. You better hurry up and get to mshilarious's house and console him, I'm not sure he can handle all this harsh treatment. Anyone else around here need tim to come save them???

Yeah, sorry man. I lost it there for a minute.

It's cool. Like I said I'm still going to support mshilarious and buy a few.

Ding ding ding. That is correct.

Let's open up door number 1 to see what Johnny wins.

Oh ... what's this? Looks like he's won ... "the 2006 Almanac of Big Ray's Technical Knowlege on Tube Mics." To you and I, that would equate to a scratch pad full of blank sheets.

Gefell um900
AT3060

both are phantom-powered tube mics.

I use a 1kHz test tone and analyze the results on an FFT. It's quite clear to see the peak of each harmonic.
