The MSH-4!

Just for general Info this is the Same Tube that is used in the "AT 3060 Tube mic" which is also Phantom powered....

http://www.mojopie.com/at3060.html

And this Mic sells for $500 and has less frequency responce than the MSH-4 (50hz to 15khz for the AT3060 compared to 20hz to 20Khz with the MSH-4)

And the Capsule in the MSH-4 has a Flatter responce than the AT3060 but I don"t know how the Tube affects the Capsules responce....

Cheers

I saw that but he took down the auction with yours the only sale. My guess is one of the larger tube sellers bought out his whole stock off-eBay because he was selling so far below market.

Actually I just talked to the Guy yesterday (Actually I think it is a Girl) and he/she said that they still have over 100 tubes left.....They just didn"t put the auction back up after it closed....

I just found the auction after it was allready closed (For quite a while) and sent the seller a message asking if they had more and they said they had over 100 left and after I made my payment they said to contact them if I needed any more....They even gave me a couple more than I paid for because shipping was cheaper than they thought......

You should contact them as I"m sure you will be able to get them and they are Much cheaper than I have seen at other auctions.....

Cheers

Excellent, thanks for the tip

OK, here it is.

Recorded in my control room. I plugged the mic into my Mackie 1604 and set it on the edge of my mixing table on top of the coiled up mic cable. Then sat in front of it and did this improv song accompanying myself on my new acoustic. The noise in the background is the fan of my Crown power amp.

Lyrics:

gobblefisher
You are an enabler
I hope you're happy
That I bought this mic

My MSH-4
Has a little tube inside it
And I don't know
If it's got an LED behind it because I can't see it

Excellent...this means a lot to me...

I tried singing it under your window, but you weren't home. Then someone called the cops and I had to run and hide. :D

Anybody else exited to try these mics on their toms?

When do you think they might be available?

Generally, I enter the room to try mics on my toms. Exiting would make it a lot harder. :D

That sounds good, MadAudio. Congrats, mshilarious, on another fine mic.

On a related note, I noticed on the website that the MSH-1C is "coming soon". Any chance we'll see that offered in a matched stereo pair when it comes out?

Thanks, apl. I just hope people get the Behringer joke I made in the lyrics!

BTW, I discovered that the mic clip that came with my Sennheiser e609s holds my MSH mics perfectly.

I'm excited for them to work as tom mics as well, hoping that they'll sound better than 57s.

Only time will tell (and hopefully someone will post an mp3 of them on toms).

mshilarious,

Seeing that they're such small diaphrams, would the cardiod pattern be "tighter" than a larger diaphram mic?

My quest is in less bleed from the surrounding drums.

Thanks,

Lucio

Very low power, like .01W. It doesn't glow at all, and the glass stays at room temperature.
Ah, that explains a lot. I was wondering about heat issues on a completely sealed enclosure.

After my first test with my MSH-4, I felt no heat from the unit.

Hehehe, he said "unit"... :D

No, it's not a particularly tight pattern. The high end drops off fairly well, so cymbal bleed would be reduced, but the mids and lows don't drop much at all.

I would post a clip myself, but then you would have to tolerate my drumming :o and my kit has some pieces missing these days, I sold all my cymbals a year ago when I moved, and so far I've only picked up a K China and an Azuka :o Anybody got a set of hats to move, lemme know :)

This would be fine as the cymbal bleed into the tom mics is the usual problem.

I'm really looking forward to hearing these mics and as far as your playing goes, for me it's more about hearing the tone of the drum captured.

Man, this is such a cool thing that you're doing, making these mics as affordable as they are (as I've said before). I wasn't initially interested in the msh-4 omni tube mic until I heard the clip on this thread. That acoustic sounds really good!

Decisions, decisions.

(Sorry for this little bit off-topic post)
I built the MSH-1(a?) mic using the 680 ohms resistors instead of the 480 ohms in schematics and WM-60AY (actually MCE-2000) capsule. It was a little bit noisy, is the 4 dB difference actually much better? I think 62 dB SNR is not very good as most non-electret condencers at > 77 dB.

However, the Primo EM158 is killer omni ~6 mm dia capsule:

Directivity Non-directional
Sensitivity -32 dB (0dB = 1V/Pa.1kHz)
Operating Voltage 3 V
S/N Ratio 75 dB
Current Consumption 500 µA
Impedance 1,6 k Ω
Diameter / Height Ø 5.8mm / H 2.0mm
Weight 0,13 g

The PUM-3046L (available at Mouser & Farnell) would also be a good choice for cardioid mic.

Also PUM-5250L looks good:

However, Primo EM68 has >70 dB SNR and goes to 20 kHz but is bigger one.

Shit man, don't I feel out of the loop not knowing about the MSH mics. It just so happens I'm looking for mics for my Taylor 414. Would anyone have a suggestion, including the manufacturer though I'm sure you're busy with these, between the MSH-4s or MSH-10s? Most songs will be picked, not fingered, basic style of rock in strumming style and mood and going into a joemeek VC1Qcs channel strip into an HD24.

Well the early reports on the MSH-4s aren't really in yet. So maybe you'd want to wait a few more days for impartial reports; I have only shipped 15 4s so far.

The 4, although it has essentially the same high-frequency response as the 1O, is less detailed as those highs are kinda smeared with the harmonic distortion of lower fundamentals. So I don't think it makes the greatest mic *by itself* for stereo recording.

I have had a few pairs of 4s sold, but I don't really match them. Personally, I wouldn't get a pair of 4s, I would get a pair of 1Os and if I wanted the 4 sound (which I do find groovy), I would use it as a center mic and the 1Os as sides in a Decca tree-style arrangement. That is a cheaper and more flexible combination.

Thanks, man. What do you think about the combination of a 1O on the neck and a 4 on the hole?
