Yo guys,
Pick a theme and go with it will ya!
Lots of talk, no doing.

Crawdad, its your ballgame, make the call.

Fuck democracy, get on with it.
Whatever you go with will be a great challenge and interesting to say the least.

Personally speaking I went for "same lyrics - different music"

Going by this it would take a month to decide on a set of lyrics so just post anything from a classic piece of poetry to a childrens nursery rhyme, and gentlemen start your engines!

How about a bit of Wordsworth, not exactly shabby when it comes to writing.

I have a feeling that the old world nature of this may just light Sam's candle more than others. You dont have to use all the words, just what you need for "YOUR" interpretation.

Alan.

The Longest Day
Let us quit the leafy arbor,
And the torrent murmuring by;
For the sun is in his harbor,
Weary of the open sky.
Evening now unbinds the fetters
Fashioned by the glowing light;
All that breathe are thankful debtors
To the harbinger of night.

Yet by some grave thoughts attended
Eve renews her calm career;
For the day that now is ended,
Is the longest of the year.

Dora! sport, as now thou sportest,
On this platform, light and free;
Take thy bliss, while longest, shortest,
Are indifferent to thee!

Who would check the happy feeling
That inspires the linnet's song?
Who would stop the swallow, wheeling
On her pinions swift and strong?

Yet at this impressive season,
Words which tenderness can speak
From the truths of homely reason,
Might exalt the loveliest cheek;

And, while shades to shades succeeding
Steal the landscape from the sight,
I would urge this moral pleading,
Last forerunner of "Good night!"

Summer ebbs; — each day that follows
Is a reflux from on high,
Tending to the darksome hollows
Where the frosts of winter lie.

He who governs the creation,
In his providence, assigned
Such a gradual declination
To the life of human kind.

Yet we mark it not; — fruits redden,
Fresh flowers blow, as flowers have blown,
And the heart is loth to deaden
Hopes that she so long hath known.

Be thou wiser, youthful Maiden!
And when thy decline shall come,
Let not dowers, or boughs fruit-laden,
Hide the knowledge of thy doom.

Now, even now, ere wrapped in slumber,
Fix thine eyes upon the sea
That absorbs time, space, and number;
Look thou to Eternity!

Follow thou the flowing river
On whose breast are thither borne
All deceived, and each deceiver,
Through the gates of night and morn;

Through the year's successive portals;
Through the bounds which many a star
Marks, not mindless of frail mortals,
When his light returns from far.

Thus when thou with Time hast travelled
Toward the mighty gulf of things,
And the mazy stream unravelled
With thy best imaginings;

Think, if thou on beauty leanest,
Think how pitiful that stay,
Did not virtue give the meanest
Charms superior to decay.

Duty, like a strict preceptor,
Sometimes frowns, or seems to frown;
Choose her thistle for thy sceptre,
While youth's roses are thy crown.

Grasp it, — if thou shrink and tremble,
Fairest damsel of the green,
Thou wilt lack the only symbol
That proclaims a genuine queen;

And ensures those palms of honor
Which selected spirits wear,
Bending low before the Donor,
Lord of heaven's unchanging year!

I see two threads happening here...

>deciding what to do for the next clinic extravaganza..

>and Waldo's warning/info about copyright bullshit. Personally, let the Hendrix estate come and find me at homerecording.com for doing Purple Haze.. I mean...really...get real, eh?

2nd(ly) I already did a copy of someone else's tune... do I get extra credit and a free BBTTEEZZ buttfucker with pull out lights for my rack?

and lastly... Jmarcomb... deciding a deadline IS a rule... so you lose!!

oh yeah...dbl. lastly(like a triple dog dare!!!)...how 'bout pulling songs out of a hat? that'd be a challenge:confused:

As John Fohgerty (sp?) once said "Save the legal stuff for the suits !!"

BPOCO

John Fogerty got screwed worse than anybody in modern rock history too.He doesnt own the rights to his OWN songs from the CCR days.

Thats what the poll is for.The clear cut winner at this time is "cover another members song".

Song entries will be March 5-10th If I understand Crawdads first post correctly.

It would be nice to have that much time. I can see it taking me a week ot two just picking who's tune I'd like to do.

Know what? Not half bad idea. Assures everyone who takes part gets an equal shot....

But then there could be people who don't want their toons covered? :confused:

Crawdad will know what to do :o

BTW--no way mix... that BBTTEEZZ Buttfucker is still up for grabs!!

Sorry about that.

Kramer,

Your right, I was wrong.
(Now there's a phrase you wont hear from Regebro any time soon) :D

It was early, waiting for the coffee perc to do its thing.

In future I'll try not to post till I have coffee in hand.

Well, Alan, I'm just going by the stuff we talked about in the ideas thread. We decided on the time March 5-10 for the postings. Why? Because we didn't want an endless stream of stuff for a month--just a 5 day avalanche!

We discussed a bunch of ideas. I put them in the poll. Somehow I was elected to this task and you know what happens when you say ok? Somebody puts a target on your back! :D So, I figured, what the hell, it sounds like fun to me. Anyway, the idea will be the one with the most votes after ten days--or whenever I decide that its a given. I just want to give everybody a chance to vote, thats all. Maybe some of the members haven't been in for a few days. I can hear them bitching now--"Why didn't I get to vote!":D Don't forget: if it WAS my ballgame, I'd have you all trying to make recordings with one mic and no effects! Things could be worse than democracy. Besides, I respect other peoples opinions and this is a forum after all, not something that belongs to me or anyone else.

So, I'm going to let the poll run for a couple more days at least. Meanwhile, if you don't like rules (JMarcomb:D) you don't have to follow any of these, of course. This is all just for fun. And--isn't the Mixing clinic about putting up whatever you want to anyway? Consider the Challenge just a diversion for those inclined to enjoy this sort of thing. Its all light hearted fun that will hopefully produce some interesting music, thats all.

Mixmkr--Yes! You do win a prize! I would feel like I cheated you personally if I gave you a BBTTEZZ (it wasn't a popular seller in the line). Now how much would you pay? Don't answer! Because I hereby bequeath to you a much bigger gift. I appoint you the headmaster and legal caretaker and guardian of the April 5-10 HR Recording Challenge! You can start gathering ideas anytime!:D

Chessrock--I am startng legal proceedings against myself as we speak. I hope to make and lose a bundle and break even!

And isn't that just about all we can ask from life (when all is said and done)?

Ok I didn't read the suggestions for new challenges, it's my bedtime, but I have a suggestion I think should be taken seriously.

I would love to hear what people come up with for lyrics on total improvisation. I don't care if the song takes years to make music for. I want to hear a persons honest attempt to sing all the lyrics to a tune on the spot with no writing at all.....no paper.

C,mon guys, what do you think? Freestyle contest?

It's scary but I think it would provide some serious entertainment.

I didn't see that choice on the poll so I guess I'll just post my tune as a challenge....give it a try.

I guess I'm in the minority here!:D
I voted for 2.0.

I really enjoyed the 1.5 theme.
It was a real challange,and it was nice just to do something and not retrack 20 times,and spend hours mixing,just go for it! :)

As far as doing covers,there are probably hundreds of covers that have been posted here over the years,never heard of any problems.
But I think we should consider the legalities for Waldo,if we are doing something as defined as a contest,not a random posting,it could come to someones attention.
If it could possibly cause any problems for Waldo,as remote as they may be,I say it's a bad idea.
As far as I'm concerned though,let them sue me,they ain't gonna get much!:D

Pete, good point that I ACTUALLY missed... (first time in 10 years, I think!). If it conflicts with the guidelines that Waldo sets at Nowhere, then they should be followed.

I heard once from some comedian that it is best to die in debt...all credit cards run up, etc. Why die with a fistfull of dollars in the bank?..Ya aint gonna spend it...might as well spend while you can!! (and maybe let the govt. pay it back, hopefully not the relatives!)

Actually crawdad, I thought the challenge was Bi-Monthly (just so we don't have non-stop challenges going on. :p ) So mix would be in charge of the May 5-10 challenge.

As for covers... I agree... we should keep Waldo's best interests under consideration, so I pulled my cover. But I'll prolly be putting it back up on my own website when I finish re-doing it. If Del Amitri wants to fly over from scotland and sue my @ss, they can be my guest.. I'd love to meet 'em. :D I made plenty of efforts to contact them and all that stuff, so you can't say I didn't try. :p

FWIW, I don't think the HR challenge will ever be the same as the very first one. Simply because the 1.5 challenge was spontaneous.. we didn't discuss it.. we didn't vote... we didn't set dates... we didn't argue aboot whose suggestion was the best... :p someone just farted out an idea one day and everyone jumped on it. That's not to say that future challenges won't be fun, or that we shouldn't keep coming up with them... I just think we should understand that now there's always gonna be somebody who didn't quite get what they wanted oat of the challenge. The 1.5 wasn't "mandatory" or anything, so just keep in mind that all successive challenges are the same. They're all in good fun. Nothin' worth gettin' bent oat of shape over. You can join in if you want,... if not,... then no biggie.

geez... here I am feeling "nostalgic" for the "good ol' days" of the 1.5 challenge already....

what a dork. :p

What about the part that says "As long as we get written permission from clinic Members", and the Waldo's follow-up 'yes'?

C'mon, mix...

crawdad - Obviously everyone's vote won't win; but maybe we could accomodate the top two/three choices? Seems not everyone would join in if they had to cover someone else's stuff.

I was actually referring to a song that was making $$ for its writer/creator/performer. Not some piece of schlop that someone ["we"] came up with and plunked it at nowhere. Personally, I could kinda "give a shit" about using someones tune here anyway for reposting in the clinic. I'm just that way....a rude, unimposing, SOB that takes tunes that are worthless pieces of incomeless making items, chewing them up, and spitting them out again to continue being a void here in cyber space with no chance of making $$$ either!!!

Thats fine with me. What will the second/third choice be?

Hey--I have an idea! We could do a Bi-monthly challenge, and I have just the ticket for it too! My idea:record something while drunk! Oh, nevermind! Maybe Malaysian folk songs done techno? Hymns done metal? One word;backwards!:D Oh, heres a challenge--everybody does whatever they feel like. How about record a song in 1.5 hours? Been there, done that, you say? Well, how about this one--recording of sphincter-opening low end sub frequencies? Could get messy, though.:D

one problem i'll have on deciding on a members song to cover is you want the original author to hear it..

some of my fav. tunes from even, the past 6 months - the guys don't seem to come around anymore.

so...in a way it limits the field of covers to not only members, but active members.
