I think it's ego suicide for anybody other than WATYF to cover one of Erland's tunes. ARE YOU GONNA' SING IT BETTER????
are you kidding??? it's ego suicide for anyone to cover his stuff... :p

but I have no ego, so it's OK. I think my voice sucks, after all. :p

and no... I assure you.. there is no chance that I will be singing it better... :p (I'm pretty sure there were no worries aboot that happening) :p

Imagine all the little home wreckers all over the world who post beatles covers on their little websites and what not... sheesh... I gaurantee you that they didn't get no freaking "permissions"
True, for the most part. And from a pragmatic standpoint, it doesn't make a lot of financial sense for copyright owners to SEEK OUT infractions that aren't cutting into their sales. (Bad PR).

Now, if you happen to piss off a website administrator,...well, you're on your own. ;)

I Know some people who played covers in clubs for years. I wont mention any names and they even got payed well for this-lol....
Im getting real sick of all the bullshit involved in the music industry. I actually wanted to do a cover cause its been years....
I know the reality is your dealing with a billion dollar industry. If your poor like me, I would assume instead of sueing me, they would burn me at the stake....

We are on the brink of WWIII and people are worried about poor folk doing covers. I better stop. My wife is giving me that strange look.
If anyone would actually want permission to cover my stuff, I would pay them-lol....

Virtually every single band in the entire country plays covers all night long every single time they play a gig. I've played in (crap, I don't know how many bands...at least a 100) a shitload of bands; some of which were pretty successful on a regional level and even a few that were being checked out by record companies
and I've never played in any band that didn't do covers. Some of them have done a lot of originals but every freakin' one of them played covers and the reality is that the vast majority of bands play all covers. So the record companies can kiss my ass. I'll play what I want when I want to play it and I defy them to do anything about it.

Well, Lt. Bob, here's whats going on. Its not the record companies that are after the performance rights money, its the creators of the songs. Most are either ASCAP or BMI members. Since its their intellectual property being used, they want compensation. Believe me, they get it.

Next time you play a club or restaurant, ask them if they pay ASCAP or BMI payments every year. Most of them do. Any place with a jukebox does. Radio stations pay fees for music use. TV stations pay performance royalties. Concert venues pay performance royalties. ASCAP and BMI collect money and the Harry Fox Agency is a part of that. I think they get 5% for whatever they do. I think they are the money collectors and administrators, but I can't remember anymore.

The record companies don't see any of this money--unless they happen to own the publishing on a song. It goes to the songwriters and the publishers. I know because I get detailed royalty payments, which show where the money comes from that they pay me. It comes from all over the world, but mostly the good ol' USA.

I'm sure that there are places that pay nothing and there are all those outdoor summer gigs that probably pay nothing. Still, songs, being intellectual property, make prformance money that is collected from all the above sources, plus the Internet and cable stations. Songs also make money from mechanical royalties--physical products such as CD's, DVD's, cassettes, vinyl LP's, sheet music, MIDI sequences sold for money, Karaoke disks, etc.

As a musician in a band, I wouldn't sweat it. The places you play are covering you so you don't owe anything. Its a different case for a guy like Waldo. If we all posted covers and it got to be a big deal, its problems for NWR members and maybe Waldo too. No more covers on NWR for me, unless I get permission. There you go--short story long.

I pulled my cover of Imaginary Lover down last night.I read what waldo wrote and got a little nervous.LOL.I knew about all of this already but so many people post covers on the net without thinking twice that I just didnt think that much about it.(the band that I covered is hurting for money at the moment too. )

All the more reason to work on MY songs.:D

BTW/Great thread!I cant wait to see what the first challenge will be.This place is gonna be over-ran with music whenever the challenge starts.

Well..................ok; I wouldn't want to cause Waldo any trouble

But they can still bite me! :D

Kramer--I can't wait until the challenge starts! Its gonna be a lot of fun, I think. By the way, this poll expires in 8 more days, then the final result will be posted. Looking like "cover another members song" at his point, but we'll see.

Lt. Bob--I know how you feel. I've been playing covers all my life too! All this machinery is great for guys who had 15 minutes of fame thoug. Imagine if you had written some tune that was still getting played 20 years later. You'd feel like you were owed something for its use as well.

As long as I don't have to do the biting....:D

If the "cover another clinic member's song" thing wins...

Okay... after carelessly skimming all the copyright crapola... (that happens to pay people like crawdad very nicely :D)... I didn't see anything in there that indicated we couldn't just ask each other if it's ok to cover each other's song. I assume (making an "ass" out of "u" and "me") that this would work? As long as written permission is given?

Ok... shifting gears...

I'm thinkin that some people may be discouraged if this option wins, preferring something else. While I feel for ya, IMO this covering another member's stuff is good for a lot of reasons.

1) It could be a real challenge... some of these guys are incredible!

2) It would bring the clinic even closer together... the covering artist being forced to think about someone else's toon, and the coveree, being flattered beyond all recognition.

3) (most importantly?) It would force us to listen to more stuff, incase we haven't yet heard something we liked. This would mean newbies would get better acquainted with everyone here, and people on this board would get a lot more of their stuff listened to.

another gear shift...

I'm thinkin' bout covering a lesser-known member's song. Haven't chosen it yet, but for the simple reason that it would be an easy choice to cover a Samicide or chris or macle toon. (Hopefully these guys will get a few people coverin' 'em ;)) Then again, chrisharris, jamal, Sam, Tom (SLuiCe), macle, et al have contributed a looot of music to this place... and that gives everyone a larger selection.

Just some thoughts to maybe jog this thing up some... plus a bump :)

ok... back to work... :D

Hey Party Pants. I won't tell you who I've decided to cover; I'll just say that the phrase "SHAVE MY BALLS" will be used excessively.

okay, not really. It would take me 4 months to cover one of your tunes. HAVE YOU HEARD YOU???/

I also really like the idea of doing or writing a song in another members' style. That would accomplish all the things that participant mentioned, of getting us to look closer at each others' work, without the complication of getting permission or folks having a preconcieved idea of what it should sound like.

Unless you do one of Chris' songs.........then it could be anything from twangy country to atonal marimba music. :D

The HR Bi-polar challenge

I'll probably do fenderlikingood's 1.5 song.. 'he's flying!!'

Hey Waldo, should I take 'safety dance' and 'I feel good' off my page?

How about we cover one guy's work in yet another guy's style? :D So in other words, I could do Macle doing Crawdad, or Sabbath doing Erland, for instance. Personally, I'm thinking of covering a Sabbath tune in the style of Amy Phillips. :D That could get interesting.

If I covered myself, but did it in a B.Sabbath style with a ChrisHarris vibe, would that make it a TrI-Polar Challenge? :D

I'm ready for March 5th already. Got my permission direct from the artist too! Hey--wait, the poll isn't over yet (or IS it?:D)

Could you sue yourself over something like that if you didn't ask yourself permission?

hhhmmm.... I think you can.

Maybe I'll cover one of my own tunes, then sue myself for not asking permission... I sure could use the money.
