Hello Everyone, I receintly got into recording local bands and I had this one band that I did acoustically. I really like how this game out but I am curious if you guys think otherwise. Any tips on mixing/mastering will be greatly appreciated. The band is called The Guns of August and their BandCamp page is right here ---> http://thegunsofaugustca.bandcamp.com

The MP3 for the song is under this. Thanks so much!

The book was great, a real eye opener. I especially like the way author Tuchman goes right to original sources, like letters and telegrams, to build the story. It really filled out my understanding of WWI. I also like her other books, including The Zimmerman Telegram, A Distant Mirror and The March of Folly.

Oh, you mean the band is called Guns of August. Sorry about that. Not bad but there is lots of clipping and it looks like both analog and digital clipping. What is your target recording level (in dBFS)? What processing did you do in the mastering phase? I suspect you clipped the vocal some during tracking and then pushed the level in mastering without proper limiting to prevent overs.

I don't really have a target recording level, I just gain accordingly when tracking to be sure there is no clipping. Should I have a target recording level? Also, on the master I had EQ, Saturation, Maxim, and I believe that is it... VERY simple mastering but yeah. Is the clipping you are hearing around 1:50? Or is it throughout the track

There were harsh sounds on the frets of the acoustic guitars. That fzzz sound when you don't properly fret a note.

Why is an old women at the doctor's the EP picture?

I think the problem with the buzzing was that they tuned the guitar down, and with the old woman, I have no clue thats just what they chose...

When tracking you shoudl be in the -18 to -12 dB range.

The buzzing of the tuned-down guitar is noticeable. At the beginning the higher lead guitar part disappears behind the rhythm guitar. During the instrumental part after 2:05 and after that there is an occasional ringing resonant sound happening, maybe that's the guitar fret buzzing, too.

Try to make the average recorded level of a track around -18dBFS. If it's a percussive sound keep the peaks well below 0dBFS, say around -12dBFS to -6dBFS.

There's digital clipping all through the track, mostly on vocals and a few times on the guitar. I saw in one or two places what looked like analog clipping.

Hmm. I didn't notice the sound of clipping, however first impression would be back off on what ever is holding back the guitars' transients a bit, and the vocal too, perhaps similarly and/or eq is a bit muffled.
I.e. to my ear looking for a bit more life and dynamics to let things pop out better.
How much of that might be track or master compression/fx.. can't tell.

It's too loud, and the guitar's got a ringing sound that's unpleasant and the buzzing string, yeah. Turn stuff down and play cleaner.

Good tune.

I can't hear a lot of minute details being on cheap headphones through new D/A converters that I'm not too familiar with, but...

The rhythm guitarist is strumming harder than he needs too most of the time. This results in a heavy attack and relatively little sustain, so it's harder to balance the overall volume of the instrument. It also emphasizes issues with fret buzz and tuning/intonation.

There are a number of mouth noises on the vocals that you might want to comp/gate out.
