i tried somethin new (by accident) yesterday

i recorded one take as a "single" recording. that is, when i clicked the rec. button, the rec. action said "rec. on 1 channel" and the graphic image was one single "wave" like this: http://www.stefanbion.de/evpmaker/image7.gif

the second time i recorded, i had what i consider a normal rec. file; the grpahic image was "Dual" one up and one down"

like this: http://www.blazeaudio.com/howto/images/original file.jpg
does this make any sense?

the question is: is one better than the other?

Sounds like, from your description, the one with the "single" image is mono, the "dual" one, stereo.

After seeing the images...

Yes, one is mono, one is stereo (a "graphic" for each channel (L/R)).

Autist is correct.

And one is not "better" than the other one. But if you're recording a mono source to a stereo file, then you are only wasting hard drive space. A stereo file of a mono source will be twice as big as a mono file of the same source.
