Harlem Nocturne

Danny Gatton's "Harlem Nocturne" - if that doesn't turn you into a believer in the power of a Tele, I don't know what could! One of my 10 favorite guitar songs of all time!!

tele

ive been wanting a tele for a while .... probably every since i got rid of the one i had years ago [i know big mistake] ... what are your thoughts on the mim teles ?? im supposed to look at one tonight ?? anyone care to commemt on them ??

I bought one a year or so back. It was one of the swamp ash ones.
I like the neck better than the light ash imported model but it took
the neck about 6 or 7 months to really set.

Electronics were replaced right away along with tuners, nut and most
of the bridge. The components were garbage front pickup didn't work
it had a lot fret buzz and needed several setup till the neck finally set.
The guitar put out more noise than it did sound.

But after all the mods AND TIME it is a very nice guitar.

I think my next tele and my recommendation to you would be a
american or american deluxe. You may not save any money but
you sure save some time.

I've got a Deluxe Nashville Power Tele, MIM. It has upgraded bridge, pups, and an alder body with a sunburst finish. I've used it as-is until I built the dream Tele last year, and always enjoyed it. The standard may be a different story.

I've also got a Nashville Power Tele....I absolutely love it. The Swiss army knife of guitars.

Sounds like a steal to me!
If someone spent money to get a new nut cut, they probably paid for a fret level too, so it's likely that the guitar you have is much better than a new american standard, in terms of setup and playability. The sound of it will certainly be subjective; I personally don't like what a humbucker sounds like anymore... I've gotten so used to the single coils, that the midrange thump in most humbuckers just hurts my ears. But, people hear stuff so differently. I was putting new strings on my acoustic the other day. My father in-law was asking why I changed them. So, after I put the first one on, I played the new low "E" and the old "A" over and over for him, and he couldn't hear the difference. Obviously, this is apples and oranges compared to guitar players, but it's just an illustration of how our ears get trained to hear and appreciate different sounds.
I think you've done well! A good setup, and the parts you describe are worth the $300.00 you spent. Congrats!!!

you have hit the nail on the head.....you never know what the future may hold and if you ever find yourself in a cash rich situation then you have to secure your future......

you can always get through times of no cash and a tele but you cannot get through times of no cash and no tele!!:D

Sorry to hear about your separation Dave. That pretty much sucks to go through. Been there, done that. Seen the movie. etc.

That said, get yourself a 2007 or 2008 Highway One Telecaster. I think it's the only Tele Fender sells right now that has jumbo frets. Trust me, they make all the difference in the world to the playability of the guitar. If the thing is setup right, you'll think you're gonna bend the strings right off the frets it gets so silky! It still has the 9.5" radius like other modern Teles, but it's the closest thing to a real player that I've seen straight off the shelf. You can get models that have a flatter radius like 12"... but none to my knowledge that have jumbo frets. Do you get the idea I'm in love with tall frets? I am! And I think just about anyone will be if they get to play a well setup guitar with jumbos. (If they're a lead player) The problem with finding one is that the market is driven by "vintage" this and "vintage" that, and vintage frets are tiny, and a vintage Tele Radius is 7.25 inches! (just try playing lead and bending a bunch on a guitar like that... no wonder all those 70s bands had to take so log a break between songs!) as if we haven't seen technology progress in the last 50 years.... ahh welll..... that rant is for another thread, I suppose.
Or, if you really want to have a sweet axe, order a neck from USA customs to put on a custom axe.

Yay! It's only money, right?
