Not The Cards-tascam Msr-24
(You'll likely have the best results if you keep this together in one thread. Anyone wanting to help has to look at three threads now to see what the original problem was, what you've tried and what has already been suggested... or if members aren't aware of the previous threads as they disappear from page one you'll be getting the same questions and suggestions.)
If your problem isn’t following the cards as you switch them around you could have a mainboard issue for those tracks or an issue with the rec/play head. It could also be a noise reduction (NR) circuitry problem even though it happens with or without the NR engaged.
Is this the MSR-24S or the standard model with dbx Type I NR? Can you post a photo of the rec/play head?
Since your playback with a previously recorded tape is ok the problem is on the input (source) side. We just have to try to nail it down.
Try monitoring the bad tracks, 1, 3, 10, 16, 17, and 24 one at a time through the outputs as you record a tone or music from a CD or something. This will allow you to hear if the source is distorting before it reaches the head. What comes out of track 1 out should sound like what goes in track 1 in. Remember this test is a real-time test of the line in/out, and not what is coming off the tape after recording.
Also, are you using the Fostex 5030 consistently… that is, in groups of 8 like so:
Cannels 1-8 matched in order to tracks 1-8, 9-16 and 17-24? The reason I ask is that you have two bad tracks per each group of 8.
Hi everybody- I did what was suggested to me and swapped cards around from the good channels to the ones that were distorted to see if that would fix the problem, and it didn't. It made no difference at all, and I know the cards I put in the bad channels work in their respective channels. Also, it makes no difference whether or not dbx is engaged.
I'm stumped as to what to try next. Someone from New Jersey Factory Service told me that the "source mode" may be bad. Does anyone know where this section is located or how to check it out? Thanks for all the help so far!
