Okay...

So, I am using a mixture of a Tascam M308, a fostex R8, a MOTU Ultrlite, and a Sony TC-850.

Here is how I am planning to set it up.

8-D outs from the M-308 using a TRS to RCA snake to the R8 inputs.
8-R8 RCA outputs to the M-308s TRS Line inputs using another snake.
8-pgm outputs from the M-308 to the MOTU's 8 TRS inputs using another snake.
2 stereo outputs from the MOTU to the 2 inputs on the Sony TC-850.

I question is about using the pgm outputs for my mixdown of the 8 tracks to the MOTU.

Will the pgm outputs run just the basic 8 channels out or is there something special I'll need to do. I am assuming the pgm outs are for submixes with insert effects/post processing. I've never used the pgm outs before though. So, any help would be great.

The eight PGM OUTs come from the groups (orange faders) rather than the individual channels. You assign channels to a group submix and send that to a track.

Though there are 8 output jacks, there are only 4 PGM busses which feed those jacks.

So if you look closer at the labeling on the back of the M308, you'll notice that each PGM buss output jack is just split in two and that's why there's 8 jacks there.

If the motu is for the purpose of taking your 8 tape tracks into the digital world, then its probably best to use the 8 Direct outs of the M308 to feed the Motu and use the 4x2 PGM outs to feed the R-8, which will work fine so long as you're not recording more then 4 tracks at a time to tape. If you are doing live off the floor 8 track recording to tape, then your first hookup would be the only way to go. And then after that, you'd need to do some cable swapping to do the 8 tracks of tape to the Motu.

Hope that makes sense to you.

Cheers! :)
