Tascam M-30 Overdubbing Questions

Thanks SB. Actually, its not like I did anything wrong, in fact, my observation about the headphones was correct, I was just wondering about it, to see if I overlooked anything, but you verified that I was on the right track all along. I realize an old Operating manual wont provide every detail or whittle it down to specific user needs/questions, but for some things it would be nice if it could just be mentioned in a simple sentence, rather than having to dig deep into technical details or analyze diagrams. Just a simple sentence on one of the pages that the headphones wont produce sound unless the Monitor knob is turned up can be a real timesaver, but its alright, it might sound like complaining, but I am actually interested to study & learn, thus I have the Tascam manuals and my own binders to take notes and keep it all organized.

Basically, I am interested in studying and comparing the mixers I have: 2A/MB-20, M-106, M-30, and M-1516. And I suppose I can include the MX-80 and M1B as well. Even the models I do not own, I can find the op manuals online to download (or have copies of that I bought from Teac/Tascam years ago). For example, the M-06- which is a very basic mixer, but serves as a good starting point to understand signal flow- as shown in the diagrams in the manual. Thus, even if I dont happen to own that mixer, I can still find good info in its manual that helps me understand and then move ahead to the larger, more full featured mixers that Teac/Tascam made.

I enjoy doing the comparisons between them- thus, I will try the same thing as I just did on the M-30 (cd player into line inputs, route it to headphones and speakers, etc) and see how the same is done on the other mixers and make note of how easy it is to do one vs the other, and likewise, similar tasks as we proceed ahead to more involved functions.

It seems that each model offers something unique and its just interesting to me to make note of their features, and what each model can do, or cant do as well as another. I suppose in most cases, you cant always have your cake and eat it too as the saying goes, and there are compromises. For example, 2A/MB-20 vs M-106, 4 upright VU meters vs only two flat ones on 106), but several faders on the right side, vs just one on the 2A/MB-20, and even the M-30 as well... I can still see the M-30 borrowed some style ideas from the humble 2A, and I will make note of little things like how the 2A is very easy on the eye, and slopes upward toward the MB-20, whereas the M-30 is a bit more "chunky" and its main panel (where all the knobs, faders etc are) is one straight line pretty close to the edge of the meters (in other words, has more top to bottom depth size).

We’re alike…I like to learn about different devices, compare them, read the manuals, etc.
