Newby starting first home recording studio. I've already wasted a small grip of money on an Alesis Multimix8 USB 1.0 (really thought i was buying the USB 2.0 NEVER EBAY WHILE DRUNK) and am not looking to make any more mistakes as far as compatibility is concerned with my ASUS dual i5 2.3 gHZ 6GB DDR3 running 64 bit windows 7. I am looking to be able to record AT LEAST 8 simultaneous tracks and from what I've gathered my best option (meaning cheapest option) will be the tascam us-1800 (although I've heard there are still people in love with their 1641). Maybe its just because I like equipment with buttons and dials and lights (admit it, you do, too) but I want a mixing board. I've found a good deal on a Tascam m-1508 and was wondering if I'll be able to run it along with the us-1800. The m-1508 doesnt have phantom power but the 1800 has 48v for 8 xlr inputs. Am I being stubborn and wasting money when i could just use my DAW (cubase LE5 at the moment but I'm hearing things I like about reaper) as my mixer? and will running my signal through both those devices give me latency issues?

i am open to any suggestions but would like to spend under/around $300 on the interface and under/around $100 on a mixer. also, does anyone know if theres an interface/mixing board pairing with the 1800 that would allow me to do 16 tracks simultaneously? Not that I'll be requiring that anytime soon (ever) but I'd like to know its an option. Trying to maximize/futureproof my setup as much as possible especially as far as 64 bit systems are concerned and any help/suggestions/links to info would be appreciated.
