Reel deep thoughts...
Not mine, I don't know anything other than what you see in the listing linked below. I'm not endorsing it, buyer beware, ymmv, etc., etc., etc. this started out at $850 and now it's down to $650:

TASCAM 16 CHAN TAPE recorder

Well there you go! That ought to make somebody a nice little machine. Dont know about all that 456 though, LOL

*edit: If it was close to me, Id pick it up if for nothing more than adding it to the collection, especially at that price.

Damn shame to see a machine that retailed for 16 grand plus an AQ65 that was over a grand and 29 rolls of 456 which is close to another 3 grand selling for $650.

That's 3.3 cents on the dollar....great deal for the buyer. One f*ck of a loss for the seller. Wow. :(

Cheers! :)

Oh I hear you, Ghost...man-o-man. It's tempting since its just an hour away from me and its Tascam's last 1" 16-track and has all those trimmings...hard to pass up, but I have absolutely no need for a 1" 16-track, and if I did I'd probably be looking for an MS-16 just for emotional reasons. Not to mention who knows what condition it's actually in and/or what problems it has.

3.3 cents on the dollar...I think my MM-1000 machine and accessories was under 2 cents on the dollar all in, not adjusted for inflation. If I adjusted for inflation it's more like a 6th of a cent on the dollar.

Come on guys. Look at it the other way, we are able to afford pieces of analog goodness that we would never even had a dream of acquiring when new. I think its awesome!

I look in my modest little studio and see what would have cost a million dollars, or more. And at mid eighties dollar value to boot!

Far be it from me to be complaining...I'm not...it's just astounding to observe and/or partake of the significant drop in value.

Yeah, astonishment is a good description. But I guess it only applies to those who have a sense of how much these beasts went for when they were new.

Then again, people routinely spend 30 or 40 grand on a car and 10 to 15 years later its also essentially worthless.

Three cheers for the disposable society we've built! :D

Cheers! :)

:D

For me it's a mix of knowing what these machines were worth, but also understanding the precision and detail that goes into their design and the complex electromechanical tasks they have to accomplish.

that is a great deal. if i was closer i'd take it on a heartbeat, even if it is broken. It is the improved MS16, metal clampers, there is bunch of quantegy tape as i see on the pic, which may be in decent condition

Those reel adapters were first introduced on the 85-16 and were available as an option on the MS-16.

There is some basis for being drawn to the amp design on the MS-16 vs the ATR60...though I'm sure the transport servo logic is more refined on the ATR60...not to say the MS-16 is any slouch...

Yeah, I basically look at it as a refined MS-16 in a neater, cleaner package that addressed most of the issues like eliminating the external snakes that connected all the components and went straight off to a standard remote track arming system. I doubt they did much of anything to the transport though other then updating the accessory output connector. Beyond that, they basically dropped the old transport assembly directly into the ATR60-16 as is.

And yeah, if only half of those tapes are Quantegy era 456, that's worth the price right there.

Bottom line: killer deal.

Cheers! :)

Well it's gone, and no I didn't get it...but I DID correspond with the seller and he/she was not forthcoming regarding the condition of the heads and any details of the machine's history or condition.

That's not so good. Well, I'm sure the new owner will be chiming in here shortly to ask us what to do. Let me be the first to welcome him... or her. Say, are there too many hims in here and not enough hers, or is it just me thinking that?
