Sweetbeats,

What a great thread. I know I have only just found it but I was luck enough to aquire one of these decks recently for the grand sum of $150 with 4 spools of unused tape.

It had been sat for many years unplayed and really dirty however after a week of careful cleaning and servicing and following some of your past notes I now have a great sounding machine that I now only need a few minor parts to make perfect.

Thank you for the great story..

Courtney

Wow...blast from the last! :)

Glad the thread was helpful. I still remember my 58 fondly, and have occasional contact with the current owner so that's nice.

Any chance you are able to/want to post some pics of your 58?

Yes indeed, I will take some in the next day or so. It still needs a few bits but tracking spares down is a pain, although at least it's only cosmetic bits I need.

Because it's on FB and I need 10 posts, shouldnt take long though

Here's a video of it on FB, I have done more work to it since and now there is no over-run when stopping from playback etc.

Hi guys, sorry to hijack this thread but:

Just to let you know I have a couple of Tascam 58 accessories on ebay

1. rather rare Tascam RC-51 remote control - item 281280371835
2. pair of Tascam DX-4D 4 channel DBX units - item 281280382391

I also have a very nice 58 (to which these accessories were attached) but am uncertain about selling it long-distance due to weight and shipping issues.

Would you mind scanning the manual and PDF it ?

thanks

Hey,

Does anybody know how to lube the 58 capstan motor? I was gonna post a new thread, but in looking for images I found this one again. Pretty much the meta, as it were. Thanks sweetbeats!

Anyway, I'm not sure if I should disassemble some of the front of the 58 to get down into it, or if you just put a couple drops in that little hole that seems to already be there in the middle of the capstan shaft. The manual doesn't seem to say anything about it. Or I lost that part of the manual without knowing it.

???

Hi Jonk,
It's been a while since I've had to do this, and the procedure is curiously absent from the service manual (unless I'm missing pages).. but I seem to remember needing to remove a significant section of the front panel plus the pinch roller and the covering for the head-stack in order to access the capstan shaft. It almost seem like Tascam wilfully complicated the servicing of these machine...
Maybe someone else could whose done this more recently could chime in?

I'm actually trying to de-bug a friend's 58-OB right now. It was dropped at some point and required a few pcb traces to be bridged with wires; and many solder joints needed rewetting. I finally got all the channels up and running in sync and repro but I can't get it to record or erase on any channel--it's like the master bias (which I confirmed is operational) isn't getting to the cards. Anyone have any ideas where to look for faults?

What's the difference between a 58-8 and a 58OB ?

There is no "58-8". You've probably saw someone term it as such because the 58 has 8 tracks. Now, unless there was an earlier version of the 58 which didn't have the additional balanced XLR connectors in the back (in which case it could have been just called 58), the "58-8", "58" and the "58OB" are one and the same machine but it's correctly and officially called 58-OB, due to its additional balanced connectors in the back.

In Japan, 100 VAC, there was a model called the 55-8 but it was released under the TEAC brand. Though for all intents and purposes, it was a 58.

Cheers! :)

I'm thinking of selling my (Sweetbeat's old machine) Tascam 58. I do want an arm and a leg for it as that it is in outstanding condition. I'm just not using it for the last year or more. I would want to check it out before offering it to be sure there were no problems and make a youtube video etc. It is in the Portland Oregon area and any shipping would be expensive. Being such a good machine I would not want it to be mangled in shipping.

regards, ethan

PS PM if you have questions - I'm in no hurry and check this board not often.

I'd sure love to get a nice head on shot of it for the wallpaper thread here! Of all the hundreds of shots Cory took of it, none of them were a straight on face shot.

ps: hope you find a good home for it. ;)

Cheers! :)

Sweetbeats , I sent you a PM about the linkage. I could'nt post fotos in the PM so I posted them here.

It is mind boggling what people will do with these great machines. I bet the part could be made up from parts from McMaster Carr- I was taking to a guy who had one like this. I have a lot of customers call me and say they would love to have a 58. Of course with the rod in it. I am in the chicago area. I actively repair these decks so that is why I have a lot of contact with buyers.

Please post the information in the PM here in the thread. There isn't any reason to keep it private. ;)

Do you still have the Tascam 58 parts deck ? I need the linkage rod assembly. Heres foto of what I need. Mine has string.
