I suspect I'm one of the few people who've owned and used (and actually still own, but don't really use) both the 488mk2 and the 238. I don't think I perceived a major difference in sound. The 238 will chase sync (if you have an ATS500 or a Midiizer). Obviously, the 238 has no mixer ... which is fine, indeed preferable, if you do (have a mixer, that is).

I don't know what this means (nothing good, probably), but I've also had perhaps more than my share of Alesis products, some of which were ill-considered, though none so much as a 3630. The HR16 and MMT8 were actually good products for the era, though fairly obsolete now. Also the M1 (original version) powered monitors and S1 subwoofer, and a Wedge.

the 238 would be my guess. it was really a hi end unit, and if i have the right unit was taken into outerspace via Nasa....i also had a really nice "package deal" pro tascam mixer with it, and a Seinheiser 421..... beautiful sounds....the best cassette imo.

but without the mixer and mic's?
