93271 is 1993, which is during the 'bad years'. It has to be 1995 or later. Quantegy branded tape is okay, and you can get RMGI SM911 tape new, which is compatible with 456.

Well that is difference between the 38 and the 48 then. 38 has a belt :-( and 48 is direct drive ;-)
yep, that 1993 456 is very suspect. Get a reel of known good tape as jp suggested. CLEAN the machine thoroughly, if in doubt, ask.

I'm going to service and align this machine myself. I'm sure it will take me quite a while, and many times of practice, but I need to know how to do it. Can anyone tell me where I can find a spring scale for measuring the pinch roller tension? Any old hardware store will do? Also, I notice that the reel hubs are slightly off center. In other words, with the reels on, they don't spin exactly perfect. Is there a way to adjust this, or does this matter?
