Tascam 388 problems Part 2

Arent there like 500 people here on this forum who have multiple flawless condition 388s that they are sitting on that could possibly test the heat on their own heat sink so i can compare their results to mine? I would greatly appreciate it. If i put my fingers into the grooves of the sink for longer than 10 seconds it feels like im about to burn my hand. Thats with the machine being on for about 10 minutes, sitting idle.

turned mine on now for 25 min. the heat sink was just pleasantly warm with fingers between the grill. I don't ever remember it getting noticeably hot, but I'll check next time at the end of a long session.

Ok

Thank you. Thats what i needed to know. Then yes, there is something terribly wrong with this 388. Because after 25 minutes the heat sink on this thing is ragingly hot, even when its just sitting idle.

Well

Well i just called the repair shop in town, turns out they "no longer work on reel to reel recorders".

(sigh)

Sometimes i just want to take this thing and fire it at 1000 miles per hour straight into a brick wall. But, of course i would never harm it.

I did record a few guitar parts today though (before it got scaldingly hot within 10 minutes). The tracks sounded great to me. Tons of detail and character. Every time i want to ditch this thing i make the mistake of listening to how it sounds.

When i put a fuse in position F5 the glass fogs up till its like a milky white color after about 20 mins of use. F3 is the one that keeps blowing. All other fuses seem to look fine, and arent blowing etc. Anyone have a clue as to what might be going on with F5?

Cobb,

At this point it is well beyond my knowledge base...F5 looks like it powers the tranport actually but I was looking at a small copy of the PSU schematic and its hard to follow those little lines and then on top of that not having reference info at hand for the IC's...and not having a solid understanding of how they all work...

Did you tell the repair tech that its a mixer as well?

yeah

Yeah i tried explaining it, they didnt want to deal with it.

But, its ok though. I do appreciate your help to this point, and i will be sending your heatsink back to you shortly.

As far as the 388 goes, i have to think about what i am willing to do and make a decision.

Vents

I have one without the vents. A friend told me she got it off the line from the first 100. She said the later ones had chorus put in them to sweeten them up for sales. This one was modified somewhat. I also heard thatsoe of them had legs on them. But some people took the legs off because they would make a racket when rewinding. Mine does not have a bottom. I was also told that this one had a case, it was part of a small rig for touring. They took the left wooden side off it to stick it under so it could get some ventilation. I was also told they were trying to mod it to put a fan in there. The cases were tricky because you had to have a custom case made for it, like a tray case, only they had to open from the back because the fins would get caught. I'm looking for some of the bolts for the sides. I have a manual. Anyone want to help me with this one please email me: nitrochrome@juno.com.
