I mix in (2x) real-time
http://cnj.craigslist.org/msg/548363122.html

I'm trying to contact the guy to figure out the condition of the thing and the heads but for a price like this it could be a steal. I live nearby so I'll pick that hunk of analog glory up. Sorry, probably didn't have to start a thread about this but I'm just excited.:)

Thanks Steve. I feel less guilty about posting it now.:)

Yow. It's worth that just for parts. Even though I just sold mine I'd check it out.

You'd be crazy not to snap this up. The included midiizer goes for more than he's asking for both. Even if the heads were shot, it'd be worth fixing and you'd still be ahead with the deal.

388

i would do the same thing...but probably post in capital letters if I scored a 388.congratulations, your a lucky man!

Like the guys said, grab it before it's gone. $100 bucks is an absolute steal. I've seen parts units go for more than this. Just check that everything functions and looks reasonably well. Even if something needs a bit of care, still get it.

Also it's LOCAL! You can't beat that! I wish more people traded locally and quit this eBay shipping craziness. Perfectly good machines end up on land fills or as parts units, as the result of this.

Yea cjacek, I've seen many of your posts where shipping has to be done just right. I know how you feel about the subject and can't disagree with you. Though I haven't fallen victim to it I have read the horror stories.

Waiting for a good deal locally is what I've been trying to do. Not to mention, the shipping rates are horrendous. I'd rather spend that 80 bucks on a new mic and sigh when I don't have to worry about my unit shipping in one piece.

If this guy ever responds to me, I will be taking this home gently in my minivan. Easy on the turns, slow on the breaks, maybe a little quicker on the gas in anticipation. I'll have to get more tape as I only have a small 1/4" reel. But thats the next task.

I am excited.:)

Man, you have no idea how great it feels to know that my posts are making a difference. Thanks for letting me know.

I hope you get this 388. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.:)

EDIT: email the seller again, tell him you'll pick this unit up, 'cash in hand'.

Lucky for you the seller thinks it's "Old school." :) Hence the great price, given it's in good opperating condition. Ask some questions... find out the condition and then go man, go!

A good condition 388, local pick up... sweet dreams are made of these. ;)

Two emails later, this man has not responded. I wish he went to his computer as much as I'm on mine. My fingers are crossed that this all works out. I am not exactly sure what to expect. If it's been swiped already or if he's a slow responder, or doesnt want to tell me that channels 2-6 dont work:rolleyes:.

We'll see.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to get back to you sooner. I'm in the
process of moving, so that's affected my email.
Condition: I'm the original owner, and I would say it's in good
shape. I have not used it for quite a while, but I did
transfer some tapes to my computer workstation about a year ago, and
it did that job just fine.

My estimate is that it has less than 200 hours total operational
time. I think it will need some cleanup, but I doubt
that the heads would need replacement, due to the low overall usage.

I am out of town right now, but I will be back at my East Brunswick
place on Monday and Tuesday during the morning
until early afternoon.

Message from previous owner.

I am glad he got back to me. By the sound of it it should be operating okay. Probably not perfect but it will be good news if most things function properly. I am not extraordinarily hands on but I am anxious to learn the ins and outs a bit better. I'm trying to schedule a pick up for monday when he's back in town.

It could really be happening.:)

Sounds like a great deal.:) Make sure when you get it that if it gets cold let it sit for a few hours to warm up. A cold rubber belt doesnt work so well.
I would plan on ordering a new belt for it no matter what.
Its a 15.00 dollar deal and a piece of cake to change on the 388. Get some help taking it to the car and taking it in to the house. Its heavy and hard to handle. ;)

Yes, what Herm (Gary) said plus, while you're at it, replace the pinch roller. That and the belt is available from Tascam in Ca.

A couple of things which struck me, was that the seller is the original owner and that the 388 has less than 200 hours. If this is accurate, then you cannot get any better than this at any price point!! Plus it's local pickup! All I have to say is grab this deal asap!!

Prior to recording, clean the tape path properly.

Yeah I might as well replace what I can. A good way to look at it is using the money I saved from pick up(instead of shipping) on repair costs. I will have more questions if all goes well. But, I am confident that somebody in this analog forum will be willing to answer my questions (considering I used the search function first!). I am very excited about this purchase. Even with the neat little midi-izer that will probably be like reading Japanese to figure out.

Thanks for your help already guys! You are truly the most helpful group of people I know. Well ... kinda know. I know you guys so well, we go by nicknames?

The analog forum is actually closer knit than any of the other sections. At least it appears that way.:)

It looks like it comes with a Tascam Midiizer. Check out how much those go for on eBay sometime.

...under 200 hours, original owner, manual, midi-izer, local pickup, $100 = unbelievable deal!

You clean it up a little, change the belt + pinch roller and you're still way ahead of the game!

Damn, even though I'm not getting this, it's pretty exciting!!:D:D
