i got a Tascam 38 from the mid 80s which is in MINT condition literally. No wear at all whatsoever. Original manual. it even has the fuckin box and styrofoam it came with. Also came with a mid 80s analog yamaha mixer called the RM804. It looks alot like one of those old tascam m-35's or something. Anyway, i got all of this shit for 300 bucks. The console and the mixer. I just ordered some tape for it which is on its way but the only thing im confused about is why when i press play the empty reel goes REALLY fast. like as fast as rewind or fast forward. is this normal or what? some help would be good.

Yeah, when you spool it up with tape in it it'll go normal.

That yamaha mixer, if it's the one I'm thinking of is a nice mixer. Good find! You lucked out!

thanks guys

sick ass forum here. i didnt know id get help so quick. i wouldnt know if it is the mixer youre thinking of man. Its got color coded knobs and 6 VU meters on the top. it looks just like an old tascam one.

Just wanted to say welcome to the forum, and I hate you for getting that deal. :)

I've been wanting to get back into 8 track R2R for a years now, but haven't been able to afford the amount of scratch (usually $1,000 or so) that it takes for the recorder and mixer.

I finally thought, "All right, I'll just go with a Tascam 388 (8 track 1/4" R2R with the built-in mixer) because they go for much cheaper, and now they're nowhere to be found.

Where in the world did you score that deal?

It's not actually the one I was thinking but that one looks decent. Yamaha has made some really nice things through the years. The one I was thinking of is a little fancier with a nice wood enclosure but I've forgotten the model. That one looks good though and will definitely do the job.

yea i was hesitant to make a purchase as well but when i found this i couldn't pass it up you know? this gentlemen that likes about 60 miles north of me had the console and the mixer so i drove up to see what was up with that and it turned out both were in INCREDIBLE condition. the only thing was the play button wouldn't PLAY the tape when i was all spooled up with im still a little bit confused about. so anyway, he was embarrassed cause he thought it didn't work so i told him i'd give him less for it. specifically i suggested 300 for both. he was very hesitant but i walked away with it. i took it home and pushed up on the tension arm and to my surprised to play button worked fine. guess i scored.
