Tascam 244 Issue - Maybe the DBX?

After loving on my 244 in another thread, it started acting up.

Intermittently, it will sound like a compressor is pumping the audio. I think it only affects playback - in other words, it is not printing to tape like that. It does it on all channels, but at different times so you get this wierd phasing quality to the sound. It's really bad.

It was recently serviced, the belts are new, the tape is good. I suspect something to do with the DBX.

Anyone deal with something similar? I could just keep using it as a mixer for my 22-4, but I'd like to keep it working.

Yup, there's something flaky with the encode / decode dbx process. Was it like that prior to the servicing or did it start to act up afterward? Did it work fine after the service or not? I'm trying to trace a problem to someone screwing up the service job, leaving something unplugged or misaligned but that's a moot point if it was fine after the service.

I'm afraid I have no way of knowing. I bought it with goo where the belts once were . I had a tech deal with cleaning it up and replacing the belts. He said it worked great. It did work fine for the first few hours of use and then the problem started intermittently. Now it's constant.

I'm guessing something like this might be more trouble than it's worth? Maybe find another beat-up 244 to pull parts from? I don't know. It's a shame, I bought it for $50 and put another $100 into it with the tech. I guess I'll contact the tech and see if we can work something out for him to try to diagnose it without charging me the full bench charge in case it's something simple. I don't want to create a money pit.

I can still use it as a small mixer - but I could have done that before spending $100 on it :spank:.
