Tape - Noobee questions.

Hello folks,

First post, also fairly new to analogue home (not pro) recording. Seems like I picked the right time to get into tape!!!.

A few questions please:-

Anyone know if Quantegy are/will go back into production of ¼” audio. I keep reading conflicting reports.

Is/was Quantegy the last remaining ¼” tape manufacturer. Did Emtec and others get out of the game.

Am I correct in thinking that tape described as “pancakes” comes on a standard NAB hub (no sides) so that you can wind it onto a ‘sided’ reel.

Of course, last question… anyone know where there might be supplier left with tape in stock. I’m in Europe (Spain).

*edit* My apologies people, I just noticed the post on tape a few threads below. Sorry for not seeing it before posting. Is there any update on that situation with EMTEC production?. Could find a thread about my dumb 'pancake' question.. so if any can educate me on that it would help... thanks.

That's correct.

The product is designed to save the buyer a few buck, basically but the tradition started back in the 40's when there was no flanges at all! :eek:

I guess I should have asked originally... do you need special equipment to transfer a pancake to a sided reel. Do you have to fit sides to the pancake before transferring or can I just wind it over on my normal r2r.

I have a few metal ReVox reels that would be nice to re-tape.

Here is how I use a pancake. I take an empty metal reel and remove the screws that hold the flanges to the hub. I then attach the flanges I just removed to the hub that the pancake is on. Now you have a reel of tape you can use. You can then spool it onto another reel. Often times the other reel will be one of those plastic reels.

Not in all cases.

So long as the pancake is placed onto an upright deck as apposed to one that is laying on its back and if you handle the spool very carefully, you should be able to do a direct transfer to an empty reel with flanges.

Always handle the tape by the hub with or without flanges as a general safe tape handling rule.

Ever had any disasters spooling off of pancakes. I have a vision in my mind and if it's gonna happen.. it will be me.

Anyone know of a supplier (reel or pancake) with 1/4" audio in stock?.
